Last successful Windows Update - 5/11/2016

This morning (6/19/2016) I tried to run Windows Update.
There was a list of 28 Important updates to be done.
I took the default which was to select them all.
After a very long time, there was no progress on downloading these updates - still 0 - which had never happened before.
I stopped the update attempt, and selected a single small sized update, and again, no progress after a long time.

I next did some research on the Internet about this, and tried:

1) stop 3 services - renamed \system32\catroot2 and SoftwareDistribution
2) restarted the 3 services

Retried Windows Update - nothing showed up in the list, and after a very long time I cancelled it
When these Windows Updates are happening - svchost.exe runs at 50% CPU but nothing else is consuming CPU or disk I/Os

Next - I ran the Windows Update Mr Fixit - no help
Next - I ran Windows Update Diagnostics which gives a Windows Update Error 0x80070057
every run of this shows:
. Service registration is missing or corrupt - Fixed
Reset service registration - Completed
. Windows Update error 0x80070057 - Fixed (not really fixed given the above error)
Resetting Windows Update data store Completed
. Problems installing recent updates - Fixed
Repair Windows Update - Completed

Next - I ran SURT - no help

sfc /scannow shows no errors.

I tried the registry change here:
BEST FIX: Steps to Fix Windows Update Error x8:p57

No help.

Looking for help.

A reinstall of Windows is not a happy suggestion - given all of the software which I have installed over the years.
And, I have no interest in upgrading to Windows 10.

I will let Windows Update run over night - just in case - and should something magical happen I will post an update

I can't seem to upload my BCS.zip file - no idea why this upload is not working.

Resolved !

Well, magic happened.
This morning, there were 28 updates to be installed, and the first of the updates started to install in a short amount of time - now on update 12 after 30 minutes.
