[SOLVED] Windows update KB4493472 Fails

Windows update has been failing to install update KB4493772, so I ran SFC /scannow which reported corrupt files that it was unable to fix. I ran the SURT and SFCFix but they were not able to fix all the problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have Language Packs installed?


Retrieve the Components Hive
  1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file
  2. Please copy the COMPONENTS file to your desktop
    Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again
  3. Right-click on this file on your Desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your Desktop
  4. If file will is too large to upload to the forum please share the file using a service like Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, or upload to www.sendspace.com and just provide the link for the file here
 
Went to "Install or uninstall display languages" and it looks like a lot of languages are installed, about 35 of them.

If you don't need the other languages I think it would be a good idea to uninstall them...

  • Download SFCFix.exe (by Niemiro) and save it to the Desktop
  • Download the file SFCFIX.ZIP, attached below, and save this to your Desktop
  • On your Desktop, make sure you have the two files:

    SFCFix.exe and

    SFCFIX.zip

System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
  • Download the System Update Readiness Tool (x64) and save it to some place, its a big download and eventually we need to run it several times, please keep the file
  • Run the tool. Its like an Update but it can take a long time to do the work. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running
  • Please attach to your post the log from the following location: C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
    Note:
    If the file is too big please Zip it and upload the ZIP file to a service like Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive or upload to SendSpace and just provide the link for the file here.

Hi,

Run SFC /scannow again, if the result is "reported corrupt files that it was unable to fix" collect the new CBS.log
 
I'm getting "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service." when I try to frun the sfc /scannow.
 
Good, Try to install KB4493472 if it fails please collect the CBS.log and post the error code generated.

Been stuck at downloading updates 0% complete for a few hours, the CBS.log file is at 3GB and still growing. Should I just let it run overnight?
 
I may have screwed up. I canceled the update and tried to install the update manually but forgot to restart the machine first. It sat there for an hour or so stuck on "scanning updates" or something similar before I re-read your post and realized I didn't restart. So I canceled the install and attempted to restart. It gave me somthing like "Windows Update is configuring your computer, Do not turn off your computer", for a while, then that changed to "Failure configuring Windows updates, Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer.", and it's been on that for a few hours now.
 
Wait if you see disk activity if not after so long I think you have to force a restart!

After restart to this:


ยป Check the Disk for Errors
  • open the Command Prompt as Administrator (Tutorial)
  • type the command:
    Code:
    chkdsk /f /x C:
    Note: When it ask if you want to checked the volume next time the system restarts answer Yes
  • Restart the Computer and let the check run during boot, it will take some time...

Next,
  • download ListChkdskResult
  • execute the file and accept all the windows prompts to authorize the program to run
  • Notepad will open with a report showing the chkdsk result
  • copy & paste the log to your reply
 
It finally finished rebooting by the time I got home, so here's the gigantic CBS.log file link. It failed with error code 80080005.
