Hi forum. I'm hoping somebody can help with my pc issues. I have a
toshiba sattelite running Windows 7 sp1 64 bit. For the last couple of
weeks Ive had issues with updates not installing and now installing
successfully but then installing again. One of the updates is IE 11
which fails to load but I have anyway running. I have tried lots of
stuff like Fix it and microsofts hotfix and the latest thing was the
repair thing from Tweaking.com all to no avail. My system appears clean
as I have done lots of scans with all the recommended stuff. Any help
would be greatly appreciated. I have uploaded some logs. Thanks in advance Jay

Hi thanks for your reply. I have used SURT a few times and have a recent log. Do you want me to run a fresh scan?

Hi sorry for the delay. Couldn't see the attach button for my reply so just copied in. Thanks again for your help

Something is not right somewhere in the registry hives.
If you browse to C:\Windows\System32\config\ and right click on components then choose properties, what is the file size?

If you run registry editor (regedit) can you navigate any of the subkeys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\PackageDetect, or do you get an error message like 'access denied'?

I get to \component based servicing\packages not \packagedetect. and dont get an error message. I did do a microsoft fix a couple of weeks ago as the subkey \component based servicing\version was missing and i followed a fix to recreate it. This got rid of the update error code 80080005 that stopped updates working at all and sfc /scannow not working, but led to this latest issue. I wish I'd asked for help earlier instead of thinking I can do it myself!

Unfortunately not. When I noticed the updates not working properly I went to system restore and the only restore point was from that morning which was labelled "critical update". All other restore points were gone and now that I think about it, until I did the above subkey fix I could not set a system restore point. Unfortunately I am not aware if there were any issues before that critical update, I was only alerted as Itunes update failed then Itunes stopped working as it said it wasn't installed properly. That was the same day as the critical update.

If you don't have a PackageDetect key (Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\PackageDetect ) and there is no restore point then your only option is to do a repair install. You will need your Windows 7 SP1 x64 DVD to do so. A repair install will keep your programs and data intact but should repair your system. More info on this can be obtained at the following link.

Hi thanks for your advice. I don't have the disc so may have to do a restore to factory. Do you have an idea of how my system got broken so I can try and avoid in the future?

It's possible that you have a bad memory chip or possibly a hard drive that is having issues. It's hard to say. We can check these if you wish. Let's start with the memory.

Test RAM With Memtest86+

Please ensure you allow 8 passes of the program!

Download Memtest86+ here:
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

Which should I download?

You can either download the pre-compiled .ISO that you would burn to a CD and then boot from the CD, or you can download the auto-installer for the USB key. What this will do is format your USB drive, make it a bootable device, and then install the necessary files. Both do the same job, it's just up to you which you choose, or which you have available (whether it's CD or USB).

Do note that some older generation motherboards do not support USB-based booting, therefore your only option is CD (or Floppy if you really wanted to).

How Memtest works (you don't need to read, it's only for those interested in the specifics):

Memtest uses algorithms (specifically two), namely moving inversion & what is deemed Modulo-X. Essentially, the first algorithm fills the memory with a pattern. Starting at the low address, it checks to see if the pattern was changed (it should not have been), writes the patterns complement, increments the address, and repeats. Starting at the highest address (as opposed to the lowest), it follows the same checklist.

The reason for the second algorithm is due to a few limitations, with the first being that not all adjacent cells are being tested for interaction due to modern chips being 4 to 16 bits wide regarding data storage. With that said, patterns are used to go ahead and ensure that all adjacent cells have at least been written with all possible one and zero combinations.

The second is that caching, buffering and out of order execution will interfere with the moving inversions algorithm. However, the second algorithm used is not affected by this. For starting offsets of 0-20, the algorithm will write every 20th location with a pattern, write all other locations with the patterns complement, repeat the previous one (or more) times, and then check every 20th location for the previously mentioned pattern.

Now that you know how Memtest actually works, it's important to know that the tests it goes through all mean something different. It goes from Test 0 through Test 12, many of which use either one or the other algorithm discussed above, among many other things.

Any other questions, they can most likely be answered by reading this great guide here:

Hi I have run Memtest recently but only 6 passes and that showed no errors. I can run again but will need to do overnight as the 6 passes previously took overnight to run.

Checked disc too and was ok. I did find malware on it and cleaned. Mysearchdial seemed to be the most serious. I shows clean now with any scan i do.

Hi just checking the repair install guide and not sure I understand step 4.Remove the current system from any digital license software, i.e. iTunes and Amazon Unbox Player. Can you explain thanks.

Sure. Programs like iTunes allow only a certain amount of computers to be authorized to listen to your DRM (Digital Rights Management) content. I believe it's five computers. If you don't de-authorize your computer before doing the repair install it's possible that iTunes will think it's a different computer and you will have to authorize it again using up one of your five available authorizations. If you have only one or two computers it's usually not an issue because you likely haven't used up your five authorizations.

More info on this related to iTunes is below.

So I don't know exactly why your corruption happened but a repair install is your only option at this point.
