I'm having a problem with Windows Update hanging up. Checking for Updates is displayed, but nothing happens after at least one hour. I did a fresh install of Windows 7 SP1 onto a Lenovo R61 Notebook with Intel Core Duo T9300 processor with 4GB of RAM. I've tried several things to resolve the problem and one KB item from Windows helped once (sorry I didn't write down the number), then after I was able to update over 100 items, the updater stopped working. I've tried Fixit and the Windows Update Troubleshooter. From the Troubleshooter, I received a Windows Update error 0x80070057. After lots of searching, I found this forum. I hope someone can help. The SFCFix is attached. CBS folder was too large to upload (111 MB).

I followed the instructions for CBS files to large to upload. They seemed to work well, but I don't see the CBS files in the thread I created. Also, the spinning dots near quick replay have been going for at least 15 min. Not sure what to do now. Sure could use some help.

I let Windows Update run for a couple hours, and it finally came back with the error code 80244019 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Let's start with the following.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Thank you for offering to help. I ran the System Readiness Update Tool and the log file is attached. Yesterday, I waited for a couple hours and the update finally completed. It then took me almost four hours to install the updates. I ran updates again today and installed the updates that appeared. It seemed to run okay time-wise, but I got other errors, such as 80070103 and 800705B3. I can't tell if these are important. Anyway, the log file is attached. I looked at it and it reported 0 errors.

I completed all the steps without incident. Anything next? The system seems to be working well.

Now I would like you to check for windows updates. It may take an extra long time this first time since it now needs to rebuild the WU cache. Once updates are detected, let me know a few of them that are on the list to install. Thanks.

It did take a long time to check for updates, but I didn't really time it. Only two optional updates were identified and I installed both, just to make sure everything was working well. The two updates were KB3138612 and KB2952664. I checked for updates again tonight. It took about 1 minute and said Windows was up to date. It seems like the system is working well. Brian, thank you so much for your outstanding help.
