[SOLVED] Windows Update hangs when checking for new updates

I have a HP Compac nc6400 laptop. It was running XP (32 bit). I have just installed Windows 7 (64 bit). I had successfully applied Windows Updates several times. But now when I check for updates, it never completes the checking.

I have looked on the internet to find a solution. One thing I tried was running the attached bat file. I still had the problem. Another was a "Fixit" from MS. It did not fix it but after it ran the history of applied updates is gone. One of the last updates was to apply SP1. It still shows in System Info so I don't think it backed out anything. I think it just erased the history.

I thought about restoring to a system checkpoint but there weren't any which kind of sureprised me. I thought when updates were applied a checkpoint was created.

I had recently installed Chrome and Avast right about the time I noticed the problem. I uninstalled them but that did not fix the problem. I have since reinstalled them.

I have thought about doing another clean install but thought there might be something simpler I could try. What can I do to fix this?

Thnaks for your help.

I had an idea maybe I wasn't giving WIndows Update long enough to come back with the updates. I let it run overnight. This morning I have 177 updates ready to install.

When I clicked Install I got a message " Code 80240016 Windows Update is currently installing other updates. Please try again in a few minutes" I'll give it 15 minutes and try again.

I'm just an updating fool now.

I have installed around 200 updates this morning so I think I'm good on this. I just wasn't giving it enough time to download the large number of updates. It looks like it took about six hours to check for the 177 updates.
