Hello:

I have about 20-30 updates due on W7 Professional SP1 on a Lenovo W510, but the update package fails to install. After reverting, I installed the updates one by one, starting with the lowest KB number. On the third one, KB3146706, update failed and reverted. I can't say that this is the only "bad" update... it's just one I definitely know is not working.

I then installed and ran SURT, and the output is here. Can you shed any light on these failures?

Thank you,
ATLLD

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Before we begin, may I ask you if you intend on upgrading to Windows 10? (Only free for another week or so).

Hello BrianDrab. You helped me once before with a failed update (but I had a different userid).

I am not planning to upgrade because this laptop is 5 years old and I plan on replacing it in 6-12 months. I don't think it's worth inviting a bunch of new configuration challenges on this older machine.

Thank you,

OK, no problem. Please do the following.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Thanks. Now I need one more piece of info. Please do the following.

Step#1 - Disable Windows Update
1. Click your Start button and type cmd.exe into the search box.
2. Right-click on cmd that comes up in the search results and select Run as administrator. Click Continue if prompted with the User Account Control dialog.
3. Copy/Paste the following into the command-prompt window and hit enter. Note: You will have to right-click your mouse in the command-prompt window and select paste. You can't use the keyboard shortcuts.
sc stop wuauserv && sc config wuauserv start= disabled

4. You should see something similar to the following. The important parts are in Red. If you see this, you did it correctly.

Code:
SERVICE_NAME: wuauserv
        TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
        STATE : 3 [COLOR=#ff0000]STOP_PENDING[/COLOR]
                                (NOT_STOPPABLE, NOT_PAUSABLE, IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
        WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
        SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
        CHECKPOINT : 0x1
        WAIT_HINT : 0x7530
[SC] ChangeServiceConfig [COLOR=#ff0000]SUCCESS[/COLOR]

Step#2 - Retrieve Components/Software Hives
Note: The Software have has confidential and sensitive information in it so please send me a PM with a link to that particular hive so it's not in the public form.
  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named SOFTWARE.
  • Copy this file to your Desktop.
  • Now right click on this file on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file(s) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and then PM me the link.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBack program now.

Perfect. I received the hive, thank you. Now I just need you to re-run SURT and provide the log.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Oops. You may need to re-enable Windows Updates first. If you do, re-enable windows updates, run SURT and then disable windows update again.

Enable Windows Update
You can't use the keyboard shortcuts.
sc config wuauserv start= delayed-auto && sc start wuauserv

4. You should see something similar to the following. The important parts are in Red. If you see this, you did it correctly.

Code:

By the way, at the beginning of this thread I had previously gone into the control panel for WU and set it to "Never check for updates."

Thanks for the info. Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

The references to AMD are normal. That just means you have a 64-bit machine. AMD was the first company to come out with 64-bit processors so Microsoft named many of their files with AMD in the name. But just think of it meaning a 64-bit machine.

The fixes fails so we'll have to do these manually. Please do the following.

Repeat all the steps from Post#8. It's extremely important that you send me the newest software hive. Thanks.
