Hi

This is a Windows 8.1 laptop. I somehow managed to get all of the hundred of updates applied except one, which gives error 80073712. It was suggested that I use DISM to recover from this, but it gets to 40% and stays there for hours. The logs suggest that it's doing the same thing over and over, but I don't really know how to read the logs, so don't take that as gospel.

I've uploaded my components file to:

COMPONENTS.zip - Google Drive

I hope you can help me.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Is it your intention to update to Windows 10? It's free until July 2016. This will help me decide on the best course of action for you.

Thanks.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Is it your intention to update to Windows 10? It's free until July 2016. This will help me decide on the best course of action for you.

Hi BrianDrab

I had planned to upgrade to Win10, but not right away. I wanted to wait until I had a few days spare to learn the differences, sort out any hardware problems or replace apps that aren't compatible. To be honest I didn't know the free upgrade had a time limit so was thinking about upgrading around the end of the year.

I'm guessing that I can solve my problem if I just go ahead and upgrade? If prefer to not do that just yet of it can be avoided without too much trouble.

No problem. Just wanted to check because upgrading to Windows 10 would likely solve the issue too. Let's begin then. Please do the following.

SFC Scan
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Right-click on this file and choose Send To...Compressed (zipped folder). Please upload this zipped file CBS.zip to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Thanks. Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan

Yes it did! I decided to run Windows Update again, and it found and installed several updates, including the dotnet update that seemed to be causing the problem. I gave it a reboot, ran Windows Update again, and found one more update to apply. Now it's saying that there are no more updates. (Although it keeps trying to trick me into installing Windows 10, but that's another story.)

So, looks like it's all fixed! Thankyou very much! I have to say that the laptop is no longer pausing for periods of time, and instead is responsive and quick. I suspect there was a stuck updater process causing lots of I/O that was causing slowdowns, which have now completely gone away.

Now that it's fixed, do you still want me to run it again and show you the log?

Thanks. I need to gather some info from your machine. Please do the following.
