Subject says it all. I have no idea why, and google doesn't help my any.

I have the same problem. I started the installation of this update manually with a log file:
Code:
wusa Windows6.1-KB3042058-x64.msu /log:KB3042058.evtx
The log file contains the following explanation:
Code:
InstallWorker.01287: Exit with error code 0X800736b5 (The manifest file contains one or more syntax errors.)

So I really think it's just a bad update package.

Hi campbell. Welcome to sysnative. Please do the following. Thanks.

Step#1 - Gather Info
1. Download SFCFix.exe and save this to your Desktop.
2. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
3. Double click on SFCFix.exe to open it.
4. Follow all on screen instructions and upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop named SFCFix.txt.
5. Please post the contents of this log in your next post. Thank you.

Here is how you can find the details why Windows update issues 800736B5.
  1. Download standalone update for KB3042058 (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3042058).
  2. Stop Windows Modules Installer.
  3. Delete c:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.
  4. Start Windows Modules Installer and from elevated command line issue "wusa Windows6.1-KB3042058-x64.msu" or "wusa Windows6.1-KB3042058-x86.msu", depending on whether your OS is 32 or 64 bits.
  5. When the installation fails stop Windows Modules Installer again. It is just to keep the log file size relatively small. Now copy c:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log somewhere.
  6. In the log file search for this string: Failed to resolve execution chain. [HRESULT = 0x800736b5 - ERROR_SXS_MANIFEST_PARSE_ERROR]

Few lines above this message you will find something like "Node (ln AAA col BBB) xpath: CCC". Instead of CCC there will be XML path to the attribute that wasn't recognized by the Windows Update.

I have uploaded the SFCFix.txt file as per your request.

It didn't find any problems.

Please be advised that the cbs.zip file that shows up in the manage attachments is old and not relevant to this problem. I could not figure out how to delete it.

thanks,

Thanks. Please do the following.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

I got to step 6, but the string "Failed to resolve execution chain." is not present in the log file. The string "0x800736b5" is also not there, but the install still failed.

I'm rebooting, and will try it all once more.

Hi campbell -

Please do not attempt to follow the instructions provided by Patulus as he is not an approved helper. Please follow my steps in Post#7.

Thanks. Please do the following.

1. Download KB3042058 and save to your desktop. Go ahead and attempt the install from this downloaded file.
2. If it fails, please zip/attach the following logs
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
C:\Windows\INF\setupapi.dev.log

It failed again. Here are the zipped log files you asked for. The setupapi.dev.log remained untouched (at least the date and time on the file did not change).

Thank you. This one will be interesting.

Please do the following.

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Attempt to install the update again.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as the update fails to install. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log.

Thanks for the infomation. If possible I would like you to completely uninstall Kaspersky Total Security, reboot and then attempt to install the update again. Please make sure you have any necessary license key so you can re-install it once we are done.

Uninstalling and re-installing is not terribly difficult. Keeping Kaspersky up to date on which machine(s) are using valid licenses is a pain. In light of that, I'd like to know which of the previously run tests/steps you want me to do w/o Kaspersky installed, and what log files you will need to see (assuming that it fails w/o Kaspersky installed), because I don't wish to do this uninstall/reinstall multiple times.

BTW, I have three other PCs running Win7, all using Kaspersky, and none of them had this problem with this update.

Understood on both points.

Once it's uninstalled, I'll want you to boot your machine into a Clean Boot state using the instructions at the following article.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135

Then I'll want you to try installing the update again. If it fails I'll want the following items.
CBS.log as usual and then the following information. The feel free to re-install your AV software.

Retrieve Components/Software Hives
Note: The Software have has confidential and sensitive information in it so please send me a PM with a link to that particular hive so it's not in the public form.
  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, two of which are named COMPONENTS and SOFTWARE.
  • Copy these two files to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right click on these files on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file(s) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBack program now.
