Hello, this is my first time posting here, so I hope I get everything right!

I am running Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit on a Lenovo X140e netbook. I also multi-boot this with two other installations of Linux. So, Windows is being launched from GRUB.

The problem is that Windows Update fails to install two KBs, KB4054518, and KB3133977. Actually, when I go through the install process for these two KBs, during the process Windows Update reports that the install is a failure and then tries three or four more times to configure Windows but finally gives up.

At that time, after I log in to Windows and launch Windows Update, WU says "Windows is up to date" and displays the green shield with the checkmark. But, if I click on "View Update History" it shows the Status for these two KBs as "Failed." If, at that time, I run "Check for updates", WU will show these two KBs need to be installed. I have tried all sorts of things to no avail.

Also, my CheckSUR.log file shows two "CSI C Mark Deployment Missing ..." corruptions. They both appear to be related to the Avast antivirus software that I had installed. I have since UNinstalled that program and replaced it with Clam antivirus.

Also, I did a search with Regedit for any leftover keys for Avast and deleted them. There were about four. But these two corruptions related to avast still show up, but I can't find out where these are coming from.

My CBS.zip folder is located here: http://pc.cd/5blrtalK

Thank you in advance for any help.

Please disable dual boot and when done, retry updates.

Is there anything else we can try without doing this? I, of course, could be wrong, but I don't think dual boot is causing this problem. Other updates have installed just fine, it's just that these two refuse to install correctly. I could do it, but I'd rather not unless we discover that there's no other way to fix it.

I suspect the only issue you are having is the dual boot as we've had the error before and all was well after removing dual boot.

We've had a similar error before and it was resolved that way: [Win7SP1 x64] KB4034664 Security Monthly Quality Rollup fails: WU error 80070005

Well, I'm just not sure I want to tackle that right now. I would have to reinstall the windows mbr, and that might wipe out the Linux partitions. I can't take that chance. I also have a lot of data on those partitions that I would have to back up before even attempting the job. So, I'm not doubting your analysis, I just don't think I want to tackle this right now. I guess it'll have to be done at some point in the future, but I just don't have the time right now.

Thank you softwaremaniac for your fast and detailed work. When and if I do attempt this job, I'll come back here if I need help or run into problems. I really do appreciate your time and effort.

Cheers

Ok, I think I'm ready to give it a try. Do you know of a simple way to reinstall the windows MBR? That's the only way I know of to disable dual boot.

Update - Well, things went from bad to worse. So, I ended up doing a factory reinstall from the restore discs that I made right after purchasing the laptop. Laptop is back to normal now. Windows 7 is installed and up to date. All updates are installed. Windows Update is normal. And I now have Peppermint Linux installed dual booting windows from GRUB. Everything is working just fine.

Thanks for all your help.
