[SOLVED] Windows Update fails to install specific updates, also avast SURT errors

Hello!

I am using an HP laptop running Windows 7 x64 SP1. I used to have some issues with Windows Update which have been fixed (will explain more if needed), but now there are 6 updates being offered that always fail with "C[FONT=Segoe UI, Arial, sans-serif]ode 80070490 Windows update encountered an unknown error." My CheckSUR.log indicates 8 issues that are not fixed, and the same happens when I run SFCFix.exe (I am using Avast Free, is this related?). I have asked in another forum and someone recommended I do a repair install and immediately install KB3138612. Is this the best way to go? I was in the habit of using a registry cleaner (CCleaner) which, after what I've read lately was very dumb. Should I do a clean install and be more careful from now on?[/FONT]

Hello again,

I'm really sorry if I've taken anyone's time, but I decided that after 5 years it was a good time to do a fresh install. So far so good, so I guess I should mark this thread as solved? If anyone wants to elaborate on what was causing my problem I'd really be interested, but the problem is gone for now.

We don't have enough information to determine what the cause was but thanks for lettings us know that you did a fresh install. Sometimes that is the best option.
