Windows Update fails + SFC/scannow stops at 44%.

But! Windows Update works and all the updates have been downloaded and installed succesfully.

Step 1:
Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, then press enter.

Code:

copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.
Note: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the download link.

Step 2:
Download

CrystalDiskInfo.zip and save it on your desktop.
Extract the .zip file into a new folder.
In this new folder, run the tool DiskInfo.
When the tool is finished, it will show some information about the hard disc.
Note: Resize the window so that all information is visible.
Take a screenshot. Read this on how to take a screenshot.
Upload the image file to a file-sharing site and post the download link.

Please do following.

SFC Scan
1. Right-click on the Start

button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Right-click on this file and choose Send To...Compressed (zipped folder). Please upload this zipped file CBS.zip to this thread

I believe you suspect lack of free space on system drive.
Indeed I noticed (especially by Windows Update that free space on system drive was rapidly shrinking to very low value).
I extra moved indexing folder from C to X drive to free some space (as it few gigabytes).
SFC /scannow still stops with error (at 100%).
