Windows Update fails installing updates or OS Repair image after several bluescreens

My PC started getting bluescreens after installing updates KB5035942 and than KB5036893. Running DISM with RestoreHealth flag found 50+ prior versions of lost manifests and core files, which it didn't restore even after pointing to the downloaded WIM of same Windows release with latest integrated updates. I also use Wise 365 cleanup tool after updates, which may have contributed to erasing older update data. As a result, the PC started getting BlueScreens with random system errors each day. Since I got many desktop apps installed, Windows re-install is not the best option. Repair Install option is greyed out, when trying to reinstall Windows 11 23H2 from the latest MS ISO.

The Update service also failed installing KB5036980 and Windows Repair image. I tried to reset the Update feature using guides like this, but it still fails to install the updates, and DISM still fails to restore PC health. It seems to installs OK any security definition and similar updates.

Is it possible to repair the stock with some extra steps or expert support? Running SFCFix.exe didn't find any problems, so I guess it doesn't support Win 11? Of course I run chkdsk C: /f /r /x with reboot after each BlueScreen.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Step 1. Download
6530fbb0f4101-56f31e53c97da-SFCFix.PNG
SFCFix and save it to your desktop.

Warning: This fix was written specifically for this system. Do not run this fix on another system.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2. Run the following DISM command and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

Hi Maxstar,

After running the fix, for the 1st time DISM completed repair without multiple errors. However, CBS.log still shows couple packages missing. Would you be able to fix that? Thank you very much for your help! (y):-)

I'm also concerned about blue screens with various system errors a few times a day. Hopefully it will gone after DISM repair and next Windows update. Or may be some Registry fix is also required?

I guess you mean they are going to be downloaded at next update?
Upon reboot, the Update started downloading Windows 11, version 23H2 (repair version). Not sure if its needed at this point, may be I should reset the SoftwareDistribution folder?

These are only info lines and are not real errors, so you can ignore them if the system is up-to-date and if there are no issues. You'll see such lines more often on systems without any problems, so this is nothing to worry about.

The Update started downloading Windows 11, version 23H2 (repair version). Not sure if its needed at this point, may be I should reset the SoftwareDistribution folder? Prior attempts to manually download the Windows ISO and start repair upon mounting it in the running system ended up with "Full Reinstall" only available option, so I cancelled them. Automatic Windows repair versions via Update were downloaded OK, but always failed autoinstall.

There's no need to reset (clear) the SoftwareDistribution folder, just try to install build 23H2 if it fails please post error code and the CBS logs.

I will, but my concern is it will erase all my installed desktop apps, and only leave default Windows apps. Actually, there is no visible option to manually stop automatic Windows repair via Update.

I don't understand what you mean, but if you are concerned about to update please make a (full) backup first.

The Repair Build downloaded OK, run auto Install and even offered to reboot, but after restart it failed with 0xC1900101 error.

Download the
577bf0efb8088-FRST.png
Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:

Download the 64 bit version: - Farbar Recovery Scan Tool Link
  • Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.
  • Right-click to run the tool as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  • Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Hi,

You are running Windows 11 on unsupported hardware, this CPU an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 is almost 16 years old. I also noticed some illegal Adobe software?

All Windows 11 releases worked perfect with this CPU. Microsoft gives instructions how to setup Windows 11 on any CPU. It did not prevent updating OS regularly for years. The update error 0xC1900101 is mostly related to old drivers based on web reports, not 3rd party apps, and Defender doesn't find any viruses. I just clean install next Windows 11 release on another drive and it works perfect on this PC. ;)

Is there a way to automatically find and repair possible Registry errors failing the OS repair install and next update? Btw KB5036980 is the Update Preview for next Windows 11 release, so it may be fixed later to install on older hardware. I'm more concerned about the OS can't finish repair upgrade, and whether its needed? How to stop the Repair option from showing up at checking Updates?

Despite the fact that Microsoft provided instructions how to bypass the system requirements, it does not mean such systems are fully supported. And as you pointed out, this could be a driver problem, which could also explain the BSOD's. Please provide the following files for us.

2024-05-02 16:52 - 2024-05-02 16:52 - 001485836 _____ C:\Windows\Minidump\050224-28421-01.dmp
2024-05-02 16:51 - 2024-05-02 16:51 - 1045630228 _____ C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP

If the files are too large to attach please upload them to: WeTransfer - Send Large Files & Share Photos Online - Up to 2GB Free and provide the downloadlink.

I did PC cleanup and Windows Update reset yesterday, so all dumps were deleted. The bluescreen error is different every time, so not sure the dump will show the original problem. I tried to reinstall Windows 11, version 23H2 (repair version) twice today, the same Install error - 0xc1900101 pops-up after reboot offering to reinstall. Attached are logs I figured might be useful. So far no new bluescreens after DISM, SFC, and CHKDSK repairs, and full Update reset.
