Ive been unable to install some updates for some time and receive error codes 9c57, 80070643, and 80070bc9. SFCFix didn't find any errors and I have run every virus and malware scan I can without finding anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Sorry for the delay.

Please do the following.

Step#1 - Reset the Transactional Resource Manager

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter
    fsutil resource setautoreset true c:\
  4. Reboot your machine and then try to install just one update and let me know if it installs. Let me know which update you tried to install.

Thanks.

I got error code 80070bc9 when I tried to install seurity update for windows 7 for x64-based systems (Kb3004375). Command prompt said "fsutil resource setautoreset true c:\" was successful and I tried for the one update after a successful reboot.

Thank you for responding to my post, I had given up hope on getting my laptop back up to par.

Please do the following.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Yes you did. Now please do the following.

Step#1 - SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please zip and attach this to your next post.

OK, I see the issue in your log.

Code:
2015-05-06 23:21:15, Error                 CSI    00000007 (F) STATUS_RM_NOT_ACTIVE #155# from Windows::Rtl::SystemImplementation::DirectRegistryProvider::SysOpenKey(flg = (AllowAccessDenied), key = {provider=NULL, handle=0}, da = (KEY_SET_VALUE|KEY_WOW64_64KEY), oa = @0x15bebf0->OBJECT_ATTRIBUTES {s:48; rd:NULL; on:[28]"\Registry\Machine\COMPONENTS"; a:(OBJ_CASE_INSENSITIVE)}, disp = Unmapped disposition: 22801296 (0x015beb90))[gle=0xd0190005]

There are a couple things we can try for this.

Step#1 - Windows Module Installer
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Click your start button and type services.msc in the search box. Click on the services.msc program that shows up.
  2. Scroll down until you see Windows Modules Installer
  3. Right click it and click properties
  4. Change startup type to Automatic
  5. Reboot the computer and try Windows Update again

Only do Step#2 below if Step#1 doesn't work.

Step#2 - Clear Transactional Logfiles
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good, especially if the computer is not experiencing these exact issues. Do not attempt this fix unless instructed to do so. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it one at a time and press enter after eachone. Type Y and press enter if you are asked "Are you sure?" to any line. Ignore any failure messages, they are perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.

fsutil resource setautoreset true %SystemDrive%\

attrib -r -s -h %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\TxR\*
del %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\TxR\*

attrib -r -s -h %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*
del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.tm*
del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.blf
del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.regtrans-ms

Then give Windows Update another try and let me know how it performs.

Also you should set your Windows Module Installer service back to Manual.

Windows Module Installer

  1. Click your start button and type services.msc in the search box. Click on the services.msc program that shows up.
  2. Scroll down until you see Windows Modules Installer
  3. Right click it and click properties
  4. Change startup type to Manual

I just tried to update the remaining 8 files and 5 of them failed. I have not yet set windows module installer back to manual.
The error codes given are 80070BC9 and 9C57.
the files that failed are:
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3031432)
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3004375)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3035583)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2990214)
Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems

and the ones that were successful were:
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3045999)
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3046269)
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3033929)

OK, I assume you did Step#2 - Clear Transactional Logfiles from above. If that is true then please zip/attach an updated C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Thank you.

Thanks. Please try the following.

FRST Fix

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.
