I am using Windows 7 SP1 64-bit.

At first, I wanted to modify the proxy setting in Internet Option using Internet Explorer (IE). But I found out that when I click the 'wheel' at the top right corner in IE to open Internet Option, the 'wheel' remains blue. And when I tried to press Alt to open Internet Option from Tools, the menu bar does not even show. And whenever I try to go to any website, IE crashes and asks to close the program.

I went to google it and tried a number of possible solutions but all failed.

I tried to use Fixit50778, but it doesn't help.

I tried to uninstall the IE by Control Panel > Programs and Features > View installed updates > Microsoft Windows, but I can't find any version of Windows Internet Explorer there.

I also tried to uninstall IE using the FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*11.*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /quiet /norestart" command in elevated command prompt. After restart, IE remains buggy.

I tried to install IE11 manually too. But in the end of the installation, it shows Internet Explorer did not finish installing.

Another weird thing is, when I go to Turn Windows Feature on or off, there shows Internet Explorer 8. But when IE has stopped working, I clicked View problem details and under Application Version, there writes 9.0.8112.16421. So one shows IE8, one shows IE8.

Then I went to Windows Update. There is 3 updates which are KB3058515, Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems and KB2984972. I tried to update them all, but all failed and 3 different error codes which are 800F081F, 80073712 and 9C59 found.

I tried the WindowsUpdateDiagnostic, but there is an error too, it shows that Windows Update error 0x800F081F is not fixed.

I also ran System Update Readiness Tool, no error is shown, but after i restart, the problem persists.

I tried sfc /scannow in elevated command prompt more than 3 times, but it always fails at 48% and shows Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

I ran chkdsk c: /f /r in elevated command prompt also.

So now, I don't know what should I do, I am not sure which is the main problem. IE or Windows Update?

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Sorry for the delay. I think you may have caused more damage by the things you tried. If you are still in need of assistance, please do the following.

List Restore Points
1. Click your Start button and type powershell in the search box.
2. Right-click on Windows PowerShell that comes up in the search and select Run as administrator. Answer Yes to allow if prompted.
3. Type or copy/paste the following into the PowerShell command window and hit enter.
Get-ComputerRestorePoint > 1 | notepad 1

4. Notepad will open with some information in it. Please copy/paste this into your next post.

Thank you.
