Hi, Windows 7 update problem. Have run the SFCFix during which numerous errors were found on the first run. I have run it again but nothing discovered on the second run. I have the CBS file. I have scanned for malware, viruses etc which has turned up nothing. Can anyone help with this annoying issue.

Hi bravesirtim :)

My name is Aura and I'll be assisting you with your issue. Follow the instructions below please.

System File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't contains the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Follow the instructions below please.

Retrieving the COMPONENTS Hive
Follow the instructions below to retrieve your COMPONENTS Hive and send me it.
  • Open your Windows Explorer, and navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\Config folder;
  • In this folder, find the COMPONENTS file (there's no extension), and copy it to your Desktop;
    Note: If you receive an error message saying that the COMPONENTS file is in use, restart your computer and try again. If the error message persist, let me know.
  • Right-click on it, and select Send to... and choose Compressed (zipped) folder;
  • Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;

Exporting the CBS Registry Key
Follow the instructions below to export the CBS Key from the Registry and upload it.
  • On Windows 7, click on the Start Menu button, then enter Regedit, right-click on the icon that will appear and select Run as Administrator;
  • On Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, press on the Win key + S keys, enter Regedit, right-click on the icon that will appear and select Run as Administrator;
  • In Regedit, in the left-pane, navigate to the Registry key below and select it by clicking on it:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing
  • Once the key is selected, click on the File menu and select Export...;
  • From there Save menu, change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*);
  • Name the file CBS (without any file extension) and save it on your Desktop;
  • Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL here;

Apparently the second URL for the CBS file doesn't have anything in it.

It seems like your CBS Key is completely empty (there's nothing under it).

This is quite serious since it's not something we can fix. Do you still have your Windows installation media?

Hi Aura,

I have a Windows 7 disk for a similar machine which I obtained from Dell. What do you suggest? Other than Windows update the OS seems to work fine. There is no loss of functionality with any of our programs and systems as far as I can see.

Bravesirtim

Is that a Recovery disc, or a plain installation disc?

Hi Aura,

It is just an Operating System disk for Windows 7 SP1 64bit supplied by Dell.

No problem :) Let me know how it goes and when it's done, then I'll mark this thread as solved :) If you have any questions for the Repair Install, let me know!

Hi Aura,
The repair install wants me to create an ISO image so I have been onto Software Download and entered the Microsoft license key but it gives an error that the as the OS came pre-installed with the machine they cant help. Any suggestions or do I need to go for a full install??
Regards,
Bravesirtim

That's the thing, you cannot use OEM product keys to grab Windows 7 .iso from the Microsoft Software Recovery center. If the disc you have from Dell isn't an installation one, but a Recovery one, it cannot be used for a Repair Install, only Factory Reset.

Hi Aura,

Well ok that's about that then. I will have to use the Windows 7 DVD for a full install and set about the laborious task of installing all of the drivers. The machine came pre-installed with Windows 7 but the recovery partition on the machine is Windows 8 which of course we don't want!! However, I suppose I could go down that route and then upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 10 to see if that suits our needs any better than Windows 8. Your final thoughts would be appreciated but thanks for all your assistance so far.

Bravesirtim

Honestly this is completely up to you. I'm currently under Windows 10 and I like it. There's a few things that I don't like or have a hard time getting used to but I'll get the hang of it eventually. As for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 (not 8, it's trash I know) it's down to the user. I always loved Windows 7, but once I upgraded to Windows 8.1, I wouldn't have downgraded since I learned to like it and I found the interface (non-Aero) and lightness of the OS really nice.

Hi Aura,

I appreciate your views, I suppose it wont hurt having one of our 3 machines on 10 and see whether it fits for us. We can also downgrade back to 7 if we don't like it.

Thanks for all your help. I suppose we can now close this thread.

Kind regards,

Bravesirtim
