Hi! I have been trying to troubleshoot this windows update error 80070424 on a Windows 7 Home Premium x64 edition.

I have used the Windows Update Diagnostic a few times and got the error code 0x8007005 (CheckSURlog.zip attached).View attachment CheckSURLog.zip

Through reading troubleshooting online, I have figured out that the trustedinstaller.exe was not in the correct directory (now copied from another directory into window/servicing. However, I am missing the Windows Modules Installer service. Windows Update and Workstation services are there and running.

Windows6.1-KB947821-v33-x64 also has been run multiple times with success, but no change in error.

Hope these are also informative.

Thank you in advance for the help!

That error indicates that a service has been uninstalled.

Please download the Farbar Service Scanner from

Farbar Service Scanner Download

Right-click on the saved file and select 'Run as Administrator', and tick all the options, then click on the Scan button - copy and paste the report to your response.

Thanks for the reply NoelDP

OK - so it's not a direct WU service involved...
let's take a tangent...
we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- in your own thread, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Ok. Sticker says "Windows 7 Home Prem OA"

We'll have to cast a wider net...

I need to see your event logs...
Open Event Viewer
click on the Windows logs entry in the left pane to expand it.
Now click on the Application entry - wait while it loads.
Click on 'File' in the menu bar and select Save...
Save the file as Appevt.evtx
Repeat for the System log
then zip both, and upload them.

Just proceeded to shutdown the computer and it started to install 35 updates... Not sure how I got 35 updates that needed to be installed.

Ok all the updates were for office and sliverlight, so non-windows. The error is the same with windows update.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands
Code:
SC CONFIG dgivecp start= disabled
SC QC LanManServer
SC QC TrustedInstaller
REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{752073A1-23F2-4396-85F0-8FDB879ED0ED}
REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\AppID\TrustedInstaller.exe
REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\AppID\{752073A2-23F2-4396-85F0-8FDB879ED0ED}

.

Post the results.
Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Thanks for the step by step instructions. Looks like the trustedinstaller still doesn't work.

That has at least isolated the problem - I wonder why Farbar didn't pick up on it?

I'll post a fix soon...

We'll have to adjust permissions later, assuming this patch works at all...

I've uploaded a file - TIsvc.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it to your desktop.
Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Save it to the default location
This should create a file TIsvc.reg

right-click on the file, and select Merge
Accept the warnings, - you should then get a 'Success' message.
Close all windows, and reboot.

Then open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands.

SC START TrustedInstaller
SC QUERYEX TrustedInstaller

post the results.

Assuming the output from the first command is either 'success', or 'already started', then try a new Check for Updates, and attempt to install ONE update (the oldest) only - what happens now?

Doesn't seem to find TrustedInstaller.

Sounds like you got an error message when you used the REG file??
Let's have a look at the registry.

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands:

REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\TrustedInstaller
REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\services\TrustedInstaller
REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\services\TrustedInstaller

post the results.

I had no issue with the REG file. After re-reading your entry this morning, I realized I missed the "reboot" after the registry merge late last night. 1st update installation successful! Now I'll try to finish updating everything.
