I've been having major problems updating a Windows 2012 R2 server, reporting error 800f0831 when trying to apply multiple MS updates including KB5000848 and others. I've attached extracts from the WindowsUpdate.log & CBS.Log from the time it attempted to update to KB5000848 and failed.

Things that I have already tried.

Stopped services bits & wuauserv
Renamed Dirs %systemroot%\softwaredistribution & %systemroot%\catroot2
Started services bits & wuauserv
Restarted server
Checked for windows updates again

Run SFC /scannow - Nothing found
Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Reports the following "The restore operation completed successfully. The component store corruption was repaired. The operation completed successfully."

Managed to Install latest SSU KB4566425 successfully, manually after downloading from the Windows catalog site, then tried to update KB5000848 again, failed again with error 800f0831.

Re-ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Reports the same error "The restore operation completed successfully. The component store corruption was repaired. The operation completed successfully."

Looked into the CBS error log in more detail and noticed that we have Failed to resolve package 'Package_nnnn_for_KBnnnnnnn~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.7' [HRESULT = 0x800f0831 - CBS_E_STORE_CORRUPTION] messages, which then pointed me to your SFCFix application.

So then tried the following

Backed up the Registry on the server
Re-Ran SFC /scannow - Nothing found
Re-ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Reports the same error "The restore operation completed successfully. The component store corruption was repaired. The operation completed successfully."

Ran SFCFix, Stage 1 failed

Then carried on to the following

I've attached the SFCFix.log, which does not show much.

Here's hoping that you can help me fix this Windows update problem without having to do a full server rebuild.

Kind Regards
Sam

Hi Welcome to Sysnative,

By adding other posts after the initial post may give the impression that someone is already working with you!

Uninstall Update Manually

- open the Command Prompt as Administrator
- type or Copy & Paste the following: wusa /uninstall /KB:4457129
- confirm that you want to uninstall the update

If the result is some error like Update isn't installed, error during the uninstall, etc. execute the following steps:

Search with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST)
  • Download FRST or FRST x64 and save it to the Desktop.
(Please pick the version that matches your operating system's bit type. If you don't know which version matches your system, try FRST if it say that is not compatible with your OS you have to use FRST64)
  • open the Command Prompt as Administrator
  • type the command:
    dism /online /Get-FeatureInfo /FeatureName:TFTP|find "."
  • wait for the command to finish with "The operation completed successfully" or equivalent
  • close the window "Administrator: Command Prompt"
  • Execute FRST/FRST64 right click on the icon
    FRST.jpg
and choose Run as Administrator. Make sure all other windows are closed.
(When the Tool opens for the first time you must click Yes on the disclaimer.)
    FRST_SearchRegistry.png
  • On the Search box (1) type or Copy & Paste the following text:
    KB4457129
  • Press the Search Registry button.
  • Wait for the search to finish FRST will produce a log called (SearchReg.txt) in the same directory the Tool is run from.
  • Please attach the log to your post.

Thanks SleepyDude,

Please find attached the details that you require. After running the uninstall, this reported that it was not installed with the following message.

Thanks SleepyDude that's installed the KB5001382 update, just need to restart the server to determine the completion status, looking to do that this weekend.

SleepyDude, partial success, KB5001382 updated successfully, then went on to update the following successfully, KB297519, KB890830, KB5001382, KB5001403, however KB4486105 failed with error 8007312, please find attached CBS logs

Hi,

If you compress the CBS.log to one file it should upload just fine as attachment to your post.

SFCFix Script

!!! WARNING !!! The following fix is only relevant for this system and no other, applying this fix on another computer will not work and most likely will cause problems...
  • Download SFCFix.exe (by Niemiro) and save it to the Desktop
  • Download the file SFCFIX.ZIP, attached below, and save this to your Desktop
  • On your Desktop, make sure you have the two files:
    myjIXnC.png
    SFCFix.exe and
    sfpcJCen14An3ndjNGCI7mByhjHJud.png
    SFCFIX.zip
  • Drag the file SFCFIX.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it
  • The SFCFix tool will process the script
  • Upon completion, a log file SFCFix.txt should be created on your Desktop
  • Open the SFCFix.txt log and copy & paste the contents to your post

SleepyDude, apologies, I thought when I first tried to upload the files they were too big, which is why I spilt them into smaller files.

When running the process, it failed on stage one again, with the error message shown here, not sure if your expecting that.

Hi Sam,

By some strange reason it seems SFCFix tried to run a AutoAnalysis instead of applying only the fix! no problem the fix worked as expected.

DISM scan
  • Please open up a Command Prompt Window as a Administrator
  • Inside the command prompt window type or Copy & Paste the following command:
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Note: This may take some time to finish. Let me know if the process reaches 100% or not and any error reported
  • Locate the log c:\Windows\logs\cbs\CBS.log copy the file to the Desktop, Zip it and attach to your post.
Note: If the file is too big to attach please upload it to a service like Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive or upload to SendSpace and just provide the link for the file here.

SleepyDude, the DISM cleanup image worked successfully, see screen shot, please find attached the CBS logs file attached.

Hi,

Retry to install KB4486105 using the MSU file and collect the CBS.log if it fails.

SleepyDude, KB44886105 has been successfully applied following the server restart, also KB4603004 has also been applied using the GUI interface, so hopefully this looks to have fixed the problems now. We'll know more with the next set of updates, thanks.
