I have an issue with Server 2008 SP2 trying to demote its AD Role. After installing updates I return to windows update with the 80073712 error. I tried running SFC and get an error that a repair is already pending. The pending.xml file in winsxs is 7mb and I cannot rename. Here are some Logs that might help. Logon hangs on TrustedInstaller for several minutes. Unable to access Event Logs "Catastrophic Failure" same with server roles etc... All worked fine prior to updating.

Go to your desktop and Right-click on Packs.zip and select Extract All -> Click on Show extracted files when complete -> Extract
A window will open showing a folder called Manifests open this folder and copy all the contents -> Then paste all these files in the following path C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests
Run System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) tool again.
Once SURT has completed please post the contents back into this thread. Log is located here: C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
Download SFCFix.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.txt - do not rename it.
Save any open documents and close all open windows.
On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.txt.
Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.txt and release it.
SFCFix will now process the script.
Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.
Export CBS folder
Click the Start button
then click Computer.
Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
Find and double click on the Logs folder.
Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.

Save any open documents and close all open windows.
On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.txt.
Drag the file SFCFix.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
SFCFix will now process the script.
Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.
