Looks like there are no errors. Should I proceed with that troublesome update?

Yes, KB3170106. The IE cumulative update has been failing every month since May. I have not allowed the August updates to install yet so I am trying to fix KB3170106.

That update is for multiple versions of IE. Can you confirm that you have IE11 installed?

Also, please do the following.

SFC Scan
  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

OK, let's try installing this a different way.

Install Update with DISM

  1. Manually download the update and place it in a convenient location such as c:\temp
  2. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  3. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  4. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    cd C:\temp

replace C:\temp with your path if different

expand {update name}.msu -f:* C:\temp <----note that this is the word expand followed by a space followed by the full update name followed by a space followed by -f:* followed by a space followed by the path

replace {update name} with the name of the MSU file downloaded in step 1

    DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\temp\{update name}.cab
  5. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)?
Go ahead and do so if prompted. Let me know what errors if any come up.

That failed as well.
Code:
An error occurred - Package_for_KB3170106 Error: 0x800736

Error: 14003

The referenced assembly is not installed on your system.

I have also attached the DISM logView attachment dism.log

Please try allowing all of the updates that are available to install (including the August ones). Let's see which ones install and which ones don't. Please let me know.

We are still testing August updates for comparability. It will be a few more weeks before we are done. I will return once those updates have been approved.
