Hi,

For some reason I cannot explain, windows update failed after installing 2 or 4 updates today. I now continuously get failures with all update attempts and error code 800704090. I'm not sure how to go about fixing this. Hopefully somebody out there can help?

CBS and CHECKSUR log files attached.

Thanks.

Hello sandpit147, welcome to Sysnative!

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this isn't realistically fixable. If you look at your CheckSUR log, you will see you have 10,270 errors which is simply too many to fix.

Code:
Seconds executed: 775
 Found 10270 errors
CSI Missing Deployment Key Total count: 1147
CBS MUM Corrupt Total count: 2
CBS Watchlist Package Missing Total count: 6842
CBS Watchlist Component Missing Total count: 2279

The best way forward would be to backup your files and do a clean install: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...-install-windows-windows-7-windows-vista.html

Sorry, I'm sure this wasn't the outcome you were hoping for but this is truly the only way - short of me spending a good 20 days straight, without sleep, fixing these one by one :p

Thanks for your reply Tom.

Unfortunately my Alienware system didn't come with a set of Win 7 discs. Instead I'm told by Dell to download and install AlienRespawn which also fails to work. So far Dell have been less than helpful. Not sure where I can go with this. Have already tried re-installing from a previous image but the problems with CBS appear to exist there as well.

Any advice? Are these issues mostly registry related? If so I am comfortable and confident with editing myself (over an extended period of time obviously) but would need some direction as what I'm actually looking for.

Hi Shane,

In that case, your best bet would be to order a set of discs from Alienware and do a clean install with those.

These are all registry issues relating to problems in your COMPONENTS hive, which contains details about every Windows component on your computer. It is widely used by Windows Update, as well as other tools (like SFC), and when there's damage this severe, it's unlikely that Windows Update or SFC will ever work again. These are only the problems that the System Update Readiness Tool has picked up, there's a very good chance there are many more lurking in the background. I dealt with a thread a few months ago where I fixed 100+ errors in a CheckSUR log, which is the most I've ever dealt with in one log, and after 18 pages of posts, we were hit by a completely different, much rarer, error that we didn't manage to fix.

The COMPONENTS hive is incredibly cross linked and the keys are all linked together like a chain, so even if you were to fix all 10268 (two can be ignored) errors, a lot more will appear as a result of this, as the SURT can see the next link in the chain is also broken.

Honestly, this isn't fixable :) Sorry!

Tom
