So I have a couple issues that I want to mention. The first is the most recent. Windows update runs into a problem while installing windows security and flash player updates. The error code I get is 800703f1. A search brought me to this forum, which I'm happy to have stumbled across. I followed the instructions on this page https://www.sysnative.com/forums/windows-update/4736-windows-update-forum-posting-instructions.html, and I've attached the zipped CBS log below.

A couple things I think worth mentioning as well. I downloaded another windows update just this morning, and during restart after that update I got the BSOD. The error on that was ATTEMPTED_EXECUTE_OF_NOEXECUTE_MEMORY. Also two weeks ago I got another BSOD, I don't remember exactly what the error for that one was but I don't think it was the same as this most recent one this morning. For the earlier one I reloaded an earlier restore point on my computer and tried to troubleshoot the issue myself. I didn't come to any certain conclusion but I thought I'd narrowed it down to either a registry issue or overheating. Also after the restore I have a file that I have moved to my desktop that I can't delete. All of these lines lead me to believe that this is probably a registry issue, and puts it firmly outside of my wheelhouse. Until the previous BSOD I had never had any issues with this computer of any kind to speak of. After today though I've definitely moved to a point of "I need help."

Anything that you guys could help with would be greatly appreciated! Also with the BSOD overlap, should I move this post to that part of the forum?

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Looking at your logs I see the following.

Code:
2015-07-24 16:34:45, Info CBS Failed to load the COMPONENTS hive from 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\config\COMPONENTS' into registry key 'HKLM\COMPONENTS'. [HRESULT = 0x800703f1 - [COLOR=#ff0000]ERROR_BADDB[/COLOR]]

This likely means your component hive is corrupt beyond repair and that you will need to do a repair install. I'd like to verify though. Can you please do the following?

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

That was the COMPONENTS.LOG. There should be a file just named COMPONENTS. It may be hidden. To see if it's actually there, please do the following.

1. Right-click your Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin). Answer Yes if you get the User Account Control prompt.
2. Copy/Paste the following into the command-prompt and hit enter.
attrib c:\windows\system32\config\components

3. If it exists you will see something like the following returned in the command-prompt.
A C:\windows\system32\config\COMPONENTS

Please let me know the results.

As suspected, your hive is corrupt beyond repair. It appears it corrupted on July 16th in the evening. Do you happen to have a restore point or backup that goes prior to this date?

Sadly no. It looks like the only restore point I have is from today actually. Does that mean that I'll have to reinstall windows? I have all my files backed up so that isn't too big a deal for me. Windows 10 comes out in just a few days, do you know if it is going to be possible for me to just use a different machine until then and install that? Or will I need to reinstall Windows 8 before then anyway?

Does that mean that I'll have to reinstall windows?

Your options at this point are...
1. Repair Install (your data and programs will remain untouched and it should fix your issue).
2. At the same link you will see an option for Refreshing your PC. This will keep all your data but you will have to re-install any programs you have.
3. At the same link you will see an option for Resetting your PC. This is the factory restore. Everything is gone and you install your programs and copy your data back on.

I can't be sure that a Windows 10 upgrade will fix this as well. This is all new so I just can't say for sure. I'm really sorry we couldn't help you further to repair your machine.

Oh, no worries. You've been extremely helpful! Thanks for all the advice. I'll try the repair install and go from there. One more quick question, is there a way for me to tell if the issue is fixed once I do the repair install? I suppose I could run your Windows Update and System File Checker tool again and see if it outputs any error codes?

After you do the repair install, if you run SFC /Scannow again and it comes back and says there are no issues you are good to go. You may also come back to this thread after the repair install and I would be more than happy to validate with you.
