I've been trying to update my computer for over a year now (Win 8 to 8.1) and i've been getting error codes repeatedly (800703F1). Originally the windows store app didn't work (found an override code fix), but the OS still can't install the updates available. My PC originally came with Win 7 and I updated to Win 8 (everything went fine) until i tried to install 8.1). So far I've done everything from using the DISM tool, SFC Scan tool (didn't work), and finally used the SFCFix.exe (from niemero) and FINALLY got a decent answer... "error 1009, the configuration registry database is corrupted." I looked over the CBS log and found my PC "failed to load the COMPONENTS hive". Idk what to do.... please help.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Can you please go the following location C:\Windows\System32\config and look for the following files:
-COMPONENTS
-Any other files that start with the word COMPONENTS
-Or any files that have a similar name to COMPONENTS (it could be spelt different, have a number, a symbol etc)
If you find any please create a folder on your desktop and copy and paste all these files into this folder.
Next can you please zip this folder and upload them for me to analyze? The file may be too big to attach to this post, please use either Dropbox or One Drive.

  1. Right click on the

  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command
    dir %systemroot%\System32\config >1&&notepad 1
    [*]Please post the contents of the notepad file back into this thread

Thanks for responding so quickly :)

The files is too large so i'll upload it thru Dropbox, but here is the feedback from the Command Prompt...

Thank you, the COMPONENTS hive appears to be corrupt. I have had a quick look over it and nothing is standing out straight away as to what could be causing this. Please give me a few days days to look at it.

Hello again,

I am afraid I have some bad news for you, looking over the registry hive I was unable to work out why this is showing as corrupt or how to fix it. This is issue with the COMPONENTS hive that occurs from time to time. The bad news is that there is not currently a fix for this issue, the only we we currently have of fixing this one up is by doing a fresh install of Windows. You may have luck doing a repair install but most the time this will not resolve the issue and will require a fresh install of windows.
