I would appreciate any help I can get. I know people are doing this for free. I am just so frustrated. I was an IT in the navy for four years, but ive been out of the game so long it seems I forgot how to troubleshoot : /

Hi cbw2030,

The errors that appear here are not easy ones to fix, they relate to corrupt registry keys:

Code:

These errors can be tricky to repair, there are only a few people that can successfully repair these sort of corruptions. I will see if I can get one to take a look for you.

I need to have a
look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the
C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS
file (no extension) to your desktop and
then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site
(preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

Thank you for taking a look . I had the same problems on my old hard drive, I recently bought a Solid state hard drive and I thought a fresh install on a new hard drive would fix the issue but it didn't : /

I think I've managed to correct the bitflips...

I've uploaded a file - cbwaa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it to your desktop.
Right-click on the file and select Extract All, and save to the default destination (which should be a folder on the desktop)

Create a new System Restore point

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands.

REN C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS COMPONENTS.OLD1
COPY %userprofile%\desktop\cbwaa\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config

If you get an error with either command, STOP THERE - do not reboot! - post for instructions.

Assuming both commands go OK, reboot, and run another CheckSUR scan - post the new CheckSUR.log file.

Hey Noel thanks for helping me. Heres what happened when I tried to run the commands

C:\Windows\system32>REN C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS COMPONENTS.OLD1
The system cannot find the file specified.

C:\Windows\system32>COPY %userprofile%\desktop\cbwaa\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\Syste
m32\config
1 file(s) copied.

C:\Windows\system32>REN C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS COMPONENTS.OLD1
A duplicate file name exists, or the file
cannot be found.

It looks to me as if you accidentally ran the first command twice.
The copy of the 'fixed' file happened as expected, and when you attempted the final command in your list above, and tried to delete the new copy, it ran into trying to overwrite the renamed version.

exit the Command window and reboot - then try CheckSUR again (it'll soon tell us what happened!)

thank you for being patient with me and working with me. I tried to run the tool and I got the error " Installer encountered an error 0x80070000d the data is invalid.

I've tried a fresh install before and it didn't work. Would it help somehow if I did a fresh install again?

As far as I can tell, there's nothing significantly wrong with the file - so that error message is possibly the result of corruption at your end.
Because bitflips are involved, I suspect that the problem is with hardware - probably RAM.

You should test the RAM for problems using MEMTEST86++
See the tutorial here... https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutorials/3909-test-ram-with-memtest86.html

I ran the test and it came back with several bad sectors. I will replace the RAM but it might take me awhile financially to do it. I really appreciate your help and if I still have problems after I install I will post again. Again thank you for your time.

You're welcome - sorry that the outcome was cash-intensive! :(

Good luck.

Okay so I did come accross some ram from a friend I have it installed and I have no bad sectors but I still cant update windows. Code 80073712

There's probably residual registry problems, if you've note done a clean install (or a repair install) since the hardware change.
Since this is a fairly new install, I'd go for the clean install to ensure that there are no more hidden problems.

If this is a clean install already, post a new set of CBS files, and I'll take a look-see.
