Hello,

Like others here I to am trying to solve this latest error any help is appreciated, I'm running Windows 7 x64 Professional with Service Pack 1.

Processor
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9500 2.83GHz
4GB memory.....

A few days ago I did the latest set of Windows updates (I install all updates manually). After the installation, Windows normally will open the history and it did not, so I went and checked and saw this:

What I've tried so far:

* System restore, took it back to 5/18/15, this worked and figured it was a glitch so I reinstalled the updates to no avail same result, @ this point I cannot do a restore it errors out. I tried this from Windows and off of the DVD.

* Followed the instructions at Windows Update error 80070002 - Windows Help - error still remains
* Ran Microsoft Fixit 50202 from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/910336 - ran successfully in both normal and Aggressive mode, but error still remains
* Installed the System Update Readiness Tool from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=20858 - installed successfully, but error still remains
* Downloaded and ran SFCFix as per Windows Update Forum Posting Instructions - didn't find any errors
* Ran sfc /scannow from an Administrator command prompt, off of the retail DVD - tells me that "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

Thank you for your help. Steve

PS: The update history & installed updates are blank no info exists since these windows fix it programs ran...

can you run SFC /ScanNow from an administrator command prompt in Windows (not from the DVD)?

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Sorry for the delay. Looks like you may have some registry corruption. To be sure, I'd like to do a couple things.

Code:
2015-05-26 08:14:23, Error                 CSI    0000002d (F) STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND #11206547# from Windows::Rtl::SystemImplementation::DirectRegistryProvider::SysOpenKey(flg = 0, key = {provider=NULL, handle=0}, da = (KEY_READ|KEY_WOW64_64KEY), oa = @0x36ee000->OBJECT_ATTRIBUTES {s:48; rd:NULL; on:[156]"\Registry\Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Winners\amd64_0db39891b896d9ed521dbe76d3909bcf_31bf3856ad364e35_none_ff[gle=0xd0000034]
2015-05-26 08:14:23, Error                 CSI    0000002e@2015/5/26:12:14:23.197 (F) d:\win7sp1_gdr\base\wcp\sil\merged\ntu\ntsystem.cpp(3676): Error STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND originated in function Windows::Rtl::SystemImplementation::DirectRegistryProvider::SysOpenKey expression: (null)

Step#1 - SFC Scan
I know you have done this previously but need a fresh log. Even if it errors out like it did before, please provide log.

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Step#2 - Export SideBySide Registry Key

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide

  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file SideBySide (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.

Once done please upload this file via Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace.

Bingo. Here's what we'll need to do. I need to get a copy of your SOFTWARE hive and fix offline using a hex editor. Then I'll send back to you and have you save to your desktop. We'll then need you to boot into the recovery console and replace this. I'll walk you through it so no worries. Please follow the instructions below.

Step#1 - Retrieve Software Hive

  • One up the RegBack program that you used previously.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named SOFTWARE.
  • Copy the SOFTWARE file to your Desktop.
  • Now right click on the SOFTWARE file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (SOFTWARE.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBack program now.

Please forgive me, I have seen this statement before "One up the RegBack program". What utility do I use to accomplish this? Regedit? Where do I click new backup? Thanks

I am so sorry. My instructions were wrong. I'll update them. Please follow the instructions below.

Retrieve Software Hive

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.

That proved much more difficult than I had anticipated. Let's give this a shot.

THIS FIX IS ONLY FOR THIS POST AND THIS MACHINE. USING THIS ON ANOTHER MACHINE WILL LIKELY MAKE YOUR MACHINE INOPERABLE!!

Download New Hive
1. Please download SOFTWARENEW.ZIP and save it to the following path. C:\Users\Public\Desktop <----this path will be important later so please ensure you navigate here before saving.
2. Right-click on this file and select Extract all... Accept the defaults.
3. Once you are done you should have a folder on your desktop named SOFTWARENEW and inside that folder you should have a file named SOFTWARE.

Replace Software Hive
1. Reboot your computer and begin tapping F8 on the keyboard as it restarts.
2. this should bring you to the Advanced Boot Options screen and one of the options should be "Repair Your Computer". (If you don't have this option stop and let me know).

3. Hit enter on Repair Your Computer.
4. Select a keyboard layout and enter username/password if prompted.
5. Click on Command Prompt in the System Recovery Options window.
6. Type notepad in the command prompt window and hit enter.
7. Select the File menu and choose Open. Double click on Computer so you see all of your drive letters. You will see drive letter X: as well as others. Identify which one is your Local Disk.
8. Now you can cancel out of this window. You can also close notepad.
9. Now type the following into the command prompt window and hit enter.
ren d:\windows\system32\config\software software.bad <------please ensure you change the letter d to the drive letter you identified previously.

10. Now type the following into the command prompt and hit enter.
copy d:\users\public\desktop\SOFTWARENEW\software d:\windows\system32\config\software <------please ensure you change the letter d to the drive letter you identified previously.

11. If done correctly it should say 1 file(s) copied within the command prompt window.
12. Type exit in the command-prompt window and hit enter.
13. Click the Restart button and restart your machine normally.
14. Log in and let me know how this went.

OK done, it is a good thing I looked at the size of software file, when using the copy method above it created a folder vs a file I changed the destination to X:\windows\system32\config\ and it worked, same size.

I have done nothing else.. Thanks

EDT:

While waiting windows update came up with 2 critical and 6 optional updates....

You definitely did not want to change the destination to X:\. Following the instructions above would have resulted in a file being created and not a folder so I am confused and a little worried now about the state of your machine. Which step did you get confused on? Which step did you find that a folder was created?

After it copied it was only 4mb out of 74 mb file, I redid the copy and it over wrote the file, and the system seems to be OK....

Do I try to update?

Thanks
