Hello,

My dell laptop (win 7) isn't able to scan for updates, giving me the error code 80070002.
I'm also met with an error when using the command sfc /scannow, "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
I've looked through numerous other forums and ran the microsoft self-diagnostic tools, but nothing has worked thus far.
I also ran sysnative's own repair tool and will include the log file below.

Retrieving the COMPONENTS Hive
Follow the instructions below to retrieve your COMPONENTS Hive and send me it.
  • Open your Windows Explorer, and navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\Config folder;
  • In this folder, find the COMPONENTS file (there's no extension), and copy it to your Desktop;
    Note: If you receive an error message saying that the COMPONENTS file is in use, restart your computer and try again. If the error message persist, let me know.
  • Right-click on it, and select Send to... and choose Compressed (zipped) folder;
  • Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;

It seems that you have quite a bit of BitShifts in the Registry. This is often caused by hardware failure coming from the RAM stick(s), hard drive or processor (CPU). This being said, we'll test all three individually to make sure that they aren't failing, because if one hardware components is, you'll have to change it.

We'll start with the hard drive since it's the easiest to test. Follow the instructions below please.

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:
  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the content of the GSmartControl .zip archive and execute gsmartcontrol.exe;
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, copy and paste their name in your next reply (or take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply);
    info_failing.png

Test result: Completed without error.

Only one highlighted attribute:

I'm a little unclear as to what it means when it asks for 7-10 passes.
Memtest is showing 100% pass over 9 tests so far. Is that considered 1 pass or 9?
I'll let it go longer regardless.

Edit: it just reset the number of tests and noted 1 pass, so it'll be going a lot longer.

Idk if it's worth mentioning, but I recently tested the ram as part of resolving an unrelated problem (this Windows update problem predated the other one).

Yes, it's quite long but it's necessary in order to make sure that your RAM stick(s) is/aren't failing. When did you do that test, how long ago?

Alright, now let's run SFCFix with the BitShift:: command and let it complete. You can do it overnight if you have to :)

I let it run over night and it's still showing that it hasn't completed.
