Greetings all, and thank you in advance for the assist.

Here are the results of SFC and SFCFix. The CBS folder can be downloaded from here.

SFCFix Has Crashed

Something has gone horribly wrong and SFCFix has crashed. Would you like SFCFix
to submit a crash report to the developer so that this problem can be fixed?
Type "y" for yes or "n" for no and press enter to continue:

Hi, Gary!

Thanks.

You've been hit by a bug: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...-flags-windows-defender-ps-files-as-corrupted

There's one more file SBCModel.txt, which I've been seeing recently, but it does not seem to impact the WU operation. We can fix this or, IMO, a better choice would be a direct upgrade to 1909.

As for the crashes, unfortunately, we are aware, but Richard is quite busy and has been for quite a while, so he didn't find the time to fix the bug yet. The tool works when used with a script.

Where are you seeing the error code you posted? When trying to update? If so, which updates?

Thank you.

I will go after 1909.

Yes, when running Windows Update. The user had a problem right after an automatic update yesterday. I did a System Restore and got the computer running properly again (was extremely slow) but today when I tried to update I got the error without reference to a KB. Strange thing is I see an update installed today (KB4524148) but as far as I can recall the error showed up right away. The computer was unattended for a few minutes though.

Does this change your suggestion?

Yes, it does. I would include a SMART check with GSmartControl or a vendor's tool before attempting the upgrade. Very many times I've seen bad HDDs cause all kind of weird WU related errors like this, so I'd like to err on the side of caution.

FYI, go for MCT, not the Windows Upgrade Assistant as it has not been updated yet.

I will test the drive tomorrow but the computer has a SSD and is less than a month old. Still suggest SMART check?

Do you have the link handy?

If it's new then it shouldn't be an issue.

Just in case:

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to check your SMART status with GSmartControl:

  • Download the portable version of GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the zip file to your Desktop. Open the folder gsmartcontrol-1.1.3-win64 which should be located on your Desktop and double-click gsmartcontrol.exe to launch the program.
  • Identify your drive in the list (if recognized by the tool), and hover your mouse over it.
  • You should see something called: SMART status. It will either read: Enabled, in which case you should do the following:
  • Double-click on it to bring up its window (usually you'll find your drive by its size or its brand name);
  • Go to the Self-Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply or take a screenshot;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;
  • Please note: If the SMART Status reads: Unsupported, stop and let me know.

Thanks Mihael.

I will post tomorrow. I appreciate the quick help and direction.

Hi, Gary!

Based on your CBS.log:

Code:
2019-11-16 12:04:33, Info CBS Loaded Servicing Stack v10.0.17763.793 with Core: C:\windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.17763.793_none_7defe5934d1eb33a\cbscore.dll

So yes, it appears that you are still using 1809.

I'm not sure why you attempted to download that update as it cannot be installed onto your system because of different versioning (1809 vs 1909). The system has correctly ascertained that the update in question was not applicable and did not allow you to continue the installation process.

Can you please try the following and let me know if it upgrades the machine successfully:

  1. Download the Media Creation Tool and save this to your desktop. Go ahead and run this as well. Note: Click the Download tool now button when you get to this link.
  2. Accept the License Agreement
  3. Download the ISO file to your desktop.
  4. Double-click on the ISO and then run the setup to try and upgrade your machine.

We want to get the ISO so that you don't have to keep downloading which can take hours.

Note: Make sure you select the option to keep you applications, settings and data when offered to do so by the tool.

If it fails, please search your system for setuperr.log and attach all copies to your reply that have something in them (there is likely going to be a lot of 0 byte files, you can omit those).

Thank you.

Hi Mihael.

I followed your recommendation to go right to 1909 not knowing 1809 was on the system until I investigated after the failure.

1909 is now properly installed. However msinfo32 shows Build 18363. Is that to be expected?

Thanks!
