Hi,

My windows 10 failed to install the latest updates (KB4534132 and KB4549951) and the following error is shown: 0x80070246. I followed some procedure to fix windows updates error on the Microsoft webpage, but the computer returns errors in both DISM and sfc / scannow:

When I tried to restore health with DISM, I got:
Error: 582
An illegal character was encountered. For a multi-byte character set this includes a lead byte without a succeeding trail byte. For the Unicode character set this includes the characters 0xFFFF and 0xFFFE

When I tried the sfc /scannow, it said it cannot perform the requested operation.

I also checked the CSB log file (attached in a zip folder), and I found the following errors:
Error STATUS_ILLEGAL_CHARACTER
CBS Failed to get CSI store. [HRESULT = 0x80070246 - ERROR_ILLEGAL_CHARACTER]

I tried to run your SFCFix tool to repair Windows Update errors, but it seemed not to find any problem (SFCFix output attached).

I would really appreciate any help you can give me.

Thank you for your time

Hi,
thanks for the reply. No, the RAM was never replaced. Moreover, I tested the RAM with windows memory diagnostic, but no problems were detected.

Thanks.

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Try updating the system just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and provide the link to the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace.

Thank you for your reply.
Please find the CBS attached and the log file from the process monitor here: LogFile.PML

Let me know if I have to do anything else.

Thanks

Thanks.

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download the attached fixlist.txt and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

I retry updates, it managed to do two updates without errors (KB4537572 and KB4537759).
Unfortunately, it still found out a problem with the KB4549951 updates. It returned the error 0x800f081f.

Here the log file from the ProcMon: Logfile, and I also attached the CBS file.

Thank you again

Please do the following on that computer:

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service. Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.

Thank you for your reply,

I tried the updates, it returns the error 0x80073712. It says that there could be some missing files of the update.

During the update, I run the Process Monitor, here the Logfile, and I've also attached the CBS file.

Hi!

On your good machine, please find the following folder: C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_networking-mpssvc-admin.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.18362.1_it-it_9ff854a1de2cf408, copy it to your Desktop, zip it up and attach it for me.
