Hi, my first post on here.

Windows 10 64 Bit, 1709 build 16299.309

I have 2 updates that repeatedly fail to install:
• 2018-04 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4093112) - Error 0x8000ffff
• 2018-04 Security Update for Adobe Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4093110) - Error 0x8000ffff

I have done extensive online research and tried various "fixes" including deleting SoftwareDistribution and CatRoot2 and resetting the Windows Update services, same error every time. More worryingly, SFC and DISM both fail to run.

I've tried 'hiding' KB4093110 using Windows Update MiniTool (don't even remember where I got that from!) but the result is the same - KB4093112 still fails to install with the same error.

SFC output:
Code:
C:\WINDOWS\system32>sfc.exe /scannow

Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.

DISM output:
Code:
C:\WINDOWS\system32>Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.16299.15

Image Version: 10.0.16299.309

[==========================100.0%==========================]
Error: 0x8000ffff

DISM failed. No operation was performed.
For more information, review the log file.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log

THIS HAPPENS IN AN ADMIN COMMAND PROMPT, IN SAFE MODE, IN AN ADMIN COMMAND PROMPT OF A SPECIAL NEW TEMPORARY ADMIN USER, EVEN IN CONSOLE IF I BOOT FROM A USB INTO RECOVERY MODE! SFC and DISM are basically completely useless!

SFCFix output (unsurprisingly it's very short, because SFC and DISM both don't work!):

Code:
SFCFix version 3.0.0.0 by niemiro.
Start time: 2018-04-23 19:30:25.940

Have also tried the Windows Update Troubleshooting Tool - fails to fix. Every time I reboot I get the "Configuring Updates" screen - so SOMETHING is clearly stuck and has completely killed Windows Update. Unfortunately, because I followed a guide to reset Windows Update and therefore delete CatRoot2 and SoftwareDistribution, I've lost all history of what updates were installed previously that might be breaking things. Although I *do* remember looking at the history before it got blown away and noting that NO OTHER UPDATES had failed.

Anyway, I'm not really sure what to do next! Probably a CBS or Windows Update log or something far beyond my level of comprehension might help someone who knows what they are doing - awaiting instructions!! Thanks in advance for any help. Advanced user able to follow most instructions, just no idea how Windows Update works!

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload toa file sharing service and just provide the link here.

Would you like to try and install the latest Win10 version? That would likely be the fastest fix.

Maybe....it depends how much of my existing settings etc I’m going to lose...any idea of this?

The situation doesn’t sound too good - any idea what the corruption is?

If you think it is the best option then please could you supply a list of steps...I have already got the Media Creation Tool. I know the latest April 18 update has just been released but no idea how to create installation media for this.

Thanks

You wouldn't lose any settings, that's why I asked. It's the fastest way to fix the issue.

You have a corruption within your registry hive.

The upgrade process is extremely straightforward:

1. Download the Media Creation Tool and save this to your desktop. Go ahead and run this as well. Note: Click the Download tool now button when you get to this link.
2. Accept the License Agreement
3. Download the ISO file to your desktop.
4. Double-click on the ISO and then run the setup to try and upgrade your machine.

We want to get the ISO so that you don't have to keep downloading which can take hours.

I tried the process as described above. I wasn't watching the installation process the whole time but when I checked progress, it was showing a screen to select privacy settings (Location Services, Send Detailed Error Information and other such options). So I thought perhaps it had worked.

However when I was done with that I simply received a dialog box saying "Windows 10 Installation Failed".

Windows Update still shows 2 updates stuck with error 0x8000ffff:
KB4093112
KB4093110

I presume there is an installation log somewhere that I could supply to try and diagnose where the failure was?

Files attached in Panther.zip

I noticed in the logs that it was several hours elapsed where nothing seemed to happen...maybe PC went to sleep and that somehow ruined the process? If you think it's worth trying again let me know, otherwise hopefully you see some failure that is obvious and can be fixed!

Thanks. Is this an OEM machine or a custom built one? Please do the following:

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Attempt to run SFC Scan just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.
11908d1430506241-windows-updates-fail-repeatedly-stop-jpg

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log.

It is an OEM machine (I suppose) - an ASUS laptop. Came with Win 8 installed at factory, over time I've subsequently upgraded to Win8.1 and then Win10.
