[SOLVED] Windows Update constantly requires restart.

My Win7 64 bit machine will not check for Windows updates automatically. I says some files must be saved and closed because they are in use by the system.

Restart only brings me back to same message. I have been able to download and install some updates manually. I have tried many suggested fixes found on this forum and others, but with no success.

I believe the fix needed is the Registry Key that indicates a reboot required at the end of the line.

I used regedit and have removed that phrase at the end of the Key and then selected Windows Update and it is able to check for updates. I found 7 optional and downloaded and installed 2 and it worked fine, but when I reboot the phrase I removed returns to the line.

Appreciate some help.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Please start with the following.

1. Click your start button and type cmd in the search box.
2. Right-click on cmd that comes up in the search results and select Run as administrator. Answer Yes to the UAC prompt if it appears.
3. Copy/Paste the following into the command-prompt window and hit enter.
reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate /s >1.txt && notepad 1.txt

4. Notepad will open showing the WU info. Can you copy and paste this into your next reply?

Here is the result:

Thank you for trying to give me some help.

A bit more background on this computer. It is an HP Pavilion Slimline running Windows 7 64 bit. It belongs to my friends, a couple 86 and 88 years old. He apparently tried to download Win 10 and everything got messed up and he could not get back to Win 7. He took it to a tech store and the removed Win 10 and reinstalled Win 7. From what I can tell he used it very little since that time so it seriously needed to be updated starting with Norton Security Suite (downloaded from Comcast). I did that after cleaning up Temp files, etc. Norton took about 1 and 1/2 hours to update. I brought the machine home with me since Windows update was displaying the above message about RESTART. Many Windows update were downloaded and installed on 4/27/16 which was probably just after the re-install of Win 7 but the last one was dated June 14, 2016. I guessing something got messed up about that time.

Maybe you don't need all this information, but here it is anyway.

Thanks for all you do for people like me.

That information was actually helpful so thank you. Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Here it is, but it looks like it ran without any script.

Hi Brian,

Windows Update did not say restart so I click check for Updates and it ran a bit then came up with the following:

An error occurred while checking for updates

Error code: 80244019 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

Thanks. Please do the following and let me know when complete.

12. Once the fixes are complete you will be prompted to restart your machine. Answer Yes.

Hi Brian,

I have followed all those steps and I believe I did them correctly, but now Windows Update showed a RED X with message about must check for updates and when I click check updates it doesn't stop.

The last instruction about Start Repairs had an Important message in Yellow That the current User must be an Administrator to run the repairs. Did I miss something?

Jean

You did everything correct. When you check for updates the first time it will take a long time as it has to rebuild the windows update cache. Please let it run.

Hi Brian,

What can I say? You are awesome! I am so happy that the problem is resolved. Will you mark my thread solved and should I now unsubscribe from my thread?

Jean

Thanks again, Brian

All seems to be functioning properly now, so I will unsubscribe now. Sysnative.com is my first go to forum for any future problems.
