Hey everybody. I've been searching the internet high and low for a solution to this problem. Plenty of people seem to be experiencing it but I haven't been able to find a solution for it. This place looks like a fantastic place to get help with something like this.
Here's as much information as I can think to provide. The SFCFix log file and CBS folder are at the bottom of this post. If someone could help me through this I would be forever indebted to you.
info
- I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I recently shut down my computer for the evening. It said "Installing update 1 of 8..." and I went to bed. Woke up the next day and it was still at "Installing update 1 of 8". Restarted PC, shut down again, same thing. This is when I knew something was wrong.
- Windows Update now sits at "Checking for updates..." eternally. Even without an internet connection. If I restart the Windows Update service, the Windows Update window says "Error(s) found: Code 80080005"
- If I look in "view update history", it lists the 8 updates and says they were installed successfully, but also lists the exact same updates on different dates that I shut down without them installing as "successful" also.
- Microsoft Security Essentials also sits forever at "Searching..." when I go to update it. I feel like these may be related.
extra info
- sfc /scannow returns "Windows Resource Protection could not restart the repair service."
- I've seen people be instructed to start the Windows Modules Installer service to fix this error, but I receive "Error 1017: The system has attempted to load or restore a file into the registry, but the specified file is not in a registry file format."
- Strangely, when looking in "Installed Updates" it says "No updates were installed on this computer." I'm pretty certain this problem showed up after running a Microsoft FixIt related to Windows Update trouble.
I think I've included all the pertinent information but please let me know if any more is needed. I will be the happiest person in the world if I can get this fixed without a complete re-install of Windows!
CBS file
Attaching my CBS.zip didn't work so I uploaded it to my hosting at http://www.oatwheels.com/cbs/CBS.zip
SFCFix log file
And here is the SFCFix log file...
At the moment SFCFix.exe has been running for about 30 minutes. The last line says "Checking CBS.persist.log . . ." and hasn't moved. Will update this thread as soon as it finishes, if it does.
