Windows Update caused WinSxS files to be missing their components. I'm no genius at this but an update from Windows caused a hard crash, after rebooting the OS itself started to have issues (i.e can't SFC /scannow, can't DISM, can't reboot windows, the search bar for the windows menu will cause it to crash.) after scanning the components it seems the update forgot to add certain components back into the WinSxS files. I have no idea on how to fix this and any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,

Upload your COMPONENTS hive.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Export CBS (Component Based Servicing) hive
  • Click on the Start button and type regedit
  • When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  • When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.
    Code:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing
  • Once selected, click File > Export....
  • Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*).

  • Name this file ComponentBasedServicing (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click on the saved file and choose Send > Compressed (zipped) Folder.
  • Attach the .ZIP file to your next post.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Thanks, I'll need to setup a VM with Windows 11 21H2 with some updates to provide the first fix. So this can take some time....

This looks better, please try to run the following DISM command and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

I'm excited to say DISM worked for the first time in weeks! Is there anything else I should do now?

Please run the following command as well. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs
Code:
Sfc /scannow

SFC did not work, here is the CBS file.

*Update* : After rebooting the PC and trying again sfc / scannow worked fine.

I don't know what that means really, but anything helps. Once again thank you for helping me.

Hi,

Please run the System File Checker in an elevated command prompt and let me know the result.
Code:
SFC /Scannow

SFC /Scannow worked fine in the command prompt. "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

Hi,

Great, please attempt to update and let me know the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log(s).
