[SOLVED] Windows update and printer drivers failing

Bought a new Canon MG 2200 printer scanner a few days ago. When I run the installation disk the scanner installs fine, the printer fails to install. (installed without incident on my wifes Vista laptop)

I have tried:
uninstalling and reinstalling, allowing Win7 Home Premium to do the installation, tried running the drivers alone from download at Canon, all failed. Between attempts I go through and uninstall everything and restart to (attempt to) prevent corruption.

I have run SFC, it found nothing.
Lost track of the fixits I tried (anything remotely involved with drivers or updates)
Did a clean boot, diagnostic boot, safe boot, and a selective boot with the same results.
Using windows update failed (error 80004002). Also ran Canons Diagnostic and Repair program. It told me to install the drivers that won't install....

Using update driver from Device Manager/MG2200 properties, I get:
Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.
Canon MG2200 series Printer
The printer driver is not compatible with a policy enabled on your computer that blocks NT 4.0 drivers. If you know the manufacturer of your device, you can visit its website and check the support section for driver software.

Printer Wizard returns:
"Windows can't install the Canon MG2200 series Printer kernel-mode print driver. to obtain a driver that is compatible with the version of windows you are running, contact the manufacturer....

Windows update appears to not be functioning as well, I believe that is where the problem resides. It downloads updates but fails when attempting to install with error 80004002.
I restored to the earliest point I could, same result.

I tried to upload my CBS file but it says it exceeds forum maximum, it is 7.56 Mb

Forgot some information...sorry about that.

Computer is an Acer Aspire 7551
AMD Phenom II N970 Quad-Core @ 2.20 GHz
RAM 8.0 GB
64 Bit
AMD Radeon HD 7400M

Win7 Home Premium

appx 2 years old

Edit time expired. I saw someone do this. I split the CBS file to conform to forum.
If it means anything I can update MSE through the program but it fails using Windows update.

Modifying the registry was the key, It suddenly occurred to me that I had a copy of what was supposed to be in the printer registry print subfolder on my wifes Vista machine.
I examined the files of both machines carefully, set a restore point, backed up the registry manually (all subkeys) and exported the print sub folder to a thumb drive.
Merge, restart, PRINT!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to all the help I received on this subject. It was a major learning experience.

Edit..found it rather amusing what little was in my printer driver folder under "driver date"...it said

"01/01/1601"

When I restarted my computer it installed a ton of updates that would not install before. Update is now also functioning properly.

Well, I am sorry you ended up resolving this on your own, but appreciate the play-by-play updates. And thanks for posting the resolution - that may help others in the future with similar problems and helping others is what forums like Sysnative is all about!

And by the way, Johannes Gutenberg created his printing press in 1440 - so what's wrong with 1601? ;)

Oh, there's nothing implicitly wrong with 1601, Just WIN7 chokes on the drivers from then.....

Funny side-note on 1601:
[Date: 1601.] Conversation, as it was by the Social Fireside, in the Time of the Tudors. or simply 1601 is the title of a short risqué squib by Mark Twain, first published anonymously in 1880, and finally acknowledged by the author in 1906.
Written as an extract from the diary of one of Queen Elizabeth I's ladies-in-waiting, the pamphlet purports to record a conversation between Elizabeth and several famous writers of the day. The topics discussed are entirely scatological, notably farting and sex.
1601 was, according to Edward Wagenknecht, "the most famous piece of pornography in American literature."[1] However, it was more ribaldry than pornography; its content was more in the nature of irreverent and vulgar comedic shock than obscenity for sexual arousal.

I am having the same problem but I dont have a machine to help me. I have a Kodak Hero 4.2 printer that I can't get my driver to install on my Windows 7. Everything was just fine until I woke up to a windows update that effected both my wife and my laptops. Now we can't get our wi-fi or usb connections to work. when I try to go to control panel and and click on "ADD PRINTER" I get a DENIED ACCESS message. Kodak tech support worked on this remote and said that it was a windows issue and after 3 hours they have gave up. Can some please help me or show what I can do to fix this. It's a shame that Microsoft know this is a problem yet I can't find one fix to this problem.

Did you try system restore to date before the update? You could try uninstalling the offending update? This sounds like an update issue to me. (Remember though, I am a truck driver, not a tech....)

Good luck.

I know ur a truck driver but it seemed u were able to get urs going so I hope it won't hurt to ask. Yes I did try the restore, and I don't know where to find the update to uninstall it. Any help from anyone would be grateful.

Thank you.

I got it to work by going in and deleting all the windows update on the date of the crash. Re-installed my printer software and it worked.
