Windows Update and IE11 loop on Win7Sp1

Hi,

I have an Acer One D255. Just upgraded it to 2gb of memory to speed it up (a little!) and it gets stuck in a loop. Every time I reboot it has updates to do, but they are the same ones over and over again. About 5 get done every time successfully and then about 4 fail. Run windows update again and they are all ready to go next time. I was trying to get IE11 installed but one update always fails.

I've tried the Microsoft advice twice to rename the software distribution folders and catroot2 and remove the qmr.dat files etc to no avail.

If I run the IE11 update on its own it says it needs prerequisites to be installed first. Out of the list they all say that they are not needed except for Windows6.1-KB2670838-x86 which fails to install.

I've run sfc /scannow and the system update readiness tool Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x86 and its fixed a few errors but left me with a netio.sys error / corruption.

It's running Windows 7 SP1 starter.

If you have any ideas or suggestions I would be most grateful. If you have any suggestions on how I may make myself more self sufficient in this arena (reading material or otherwise etc), that would be most helpful too!

I have included the SFCfix.txt. I will post a copy of the CBS directory when instructed to as they are to large to upload via the forum and SFCFix says I need to be instucted by an adviser first.

Many thanks

Andy

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Let's start with the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

No problem and completely understood. Please do the following.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Thank you. Please do the following.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Thanks. To be sure I make the correct fix for these errors I will need a copy of your COMPONENTS hive. Please do the following.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Hi Brian,

I have run the SFCfix script you kindly supplied, and the SUR tool again afterwards and the results are attached.

They seem to have passed.

The WUS updates are still trying to install and revert changes.

Please advise of the next step.

Do you guys have a manual or documents that would allow me to become more self sufficient in this area or can you recommend a book or white paper or course etc. I am an IT guy used to making registry changes and slip streaming hotfixes and service paks etc.

Many thanks again

Andy

Unfortunately much of this is undocumented and there are only a select group of people who work on these. We do have an academy here where we train users that want to learn more about Windows Update and also that want to help others in the forum. If that's something that interest you we can talk about that when we are done here.

OK, now that the logs are clean I would like you to go to Windows Updates and check for updates. Let me know a few KB numbers of updates that are showing that need installed.

Hi again Brian,

WUS shows the following 13 KB's needing installing
Listed in order

IE11
KB2676562
KB2871997
KB2872339
KB3004375
KB3011780
KB3031432
KB3033929
KB3045999
KB3046269
KB2882822
KB3035583
KB3068708

8 install and say successful, and the following 3 always fail.

IE11
KB3035583
KB3112343

and these 2 are never mentioned

KB2676562
KB3046269

On reboot the system tries the rest of the installs, fails, reverts the changes and then tells me the same 12 KB's need updating,.....and around we go again!

Today it, after your fixes it found KB3126036 (MS Silverlight) was required and a couple of others,,,although it may have been a scheduled update. Anyway these were installed ok and are not offered for re-installation again.

I've now been offered 17 updates! The usual suspects plus a few more.

Driving me mad!! aha!

Cheers

Andy

OK, let's start with the following.

Please try the following. If you don't have your Windows 7 DVD, please let me know.

Revert Pending Changes
1. Boot into the Windows RE mode: How to use the Windows 7 System Recovery Environment Command Prompt
2. Once the command Window is displayed please follow the below steps.
3. Type notepad into the command prompt and hit enter.
4. Click the File menu in notepad and choose Open. Click on Computer on the left hand side so that you see all the drive letters. You sill see Boot (X:) and likely others. Look for the drive letter that is associated to Local Disk.
5. Once you've identified the driver letter you may cancel out of this screen and close notepad.
6. Now type the following into the Command Prompt replacing C (shown in red) with the drive letter you identified in bullet#4. Note, there is a space after C:\ as well as before the last forward slash.
DISM /Image:C:\ /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions

7. If all goes well you will see the following as the last few lines. Please let me know if you don't.
Code:
Reverting pending actions from the image...
The operation completed. Any revert of pending actions will be attempted after reboot.
The operation completed successfully.

Hi Brian,

Probably gonna have to wait until morning as i need to find some boot disks or USB sticks.

I shall post when done.

Thanks again

Andy

Hi Brian.

Ran the dism as directed from a windows 7 boot disk. The command ran successfully.

The system still fails to install the same updates but haven't seen it trying to revert changes yet, although I could have missed it as I haven't kept my beady eye on it all the time!

Cheers

Andy

Hi Brian,

Quick update.

It seems to revert the changes on reboot whenever IE11 tries to install.

It installs the updates, shuts down, reboots, gets to 48% configuring updates, reboots, gets to 48% again and reboots, then revert the changes, reboots and logs in.

Cheers

Andy

Hi Brian,

I have installed the MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) as an update using WUS last night.

It used to have Mcafee on it, but I de-installed that and ran the MCPR removal tool. I know that Mcafee uses IE to display its control panel and this has caused other people issues in the past. The windows update logs seem to plenty of issues in it.

Cheers

Andy
