Windows Update and BITS not working

Hi there,
Whenever I try and run windows update on my windows 8.1 laptop I get error code 80246008, I've noticed BITS won't start so I've tried starting the BITS services with no luck. I've tried and SFC scan, CHKDSK/r/f, DISM, I even tried a system refresh but they all failed. Other than not being able to update, my computer is running fine, though.

I'll attach my SFC log.txt file if that helps.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

You need to be logged in as an Administrator to do this, i'm pretty sure.

To change or restart the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)

Open your Charms bar by holding the Windows Key on your keyboard and pressing the letter C. Click search, search for Control Panel and click it.

You should see a search bar near the top right corner of the Control Panel window. Type "Administrative Tools" and click it.

Double click "Services"

Right-click the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) service, and then click Properties.

On the General tab, next to Startup type, make sure that Automatic (Delayed Start) is selected.

Next to Service status, check to see if the service is started. If it's not, click Start.

To change or restart the Windows Event Log service

Open Administrative tools by going to control panel, search for "Administrative Tools" near the top right corner of the window.

Double click services

Right-click the Windows Event Log service, and then click Properties.

On the General tab, next to Startup type, make sure that Automatic is selected.

Next to Service status, check to see if the service is started. If it's not, click Start.

Now, close all windows you may have opened from previous steps and right click on the Start button (since you have windows 8.1)...

Click Command Prompt (Administrator) then copy and paste (by right clicking not control +v, that doesn't work in CMD) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Let it run until 100% Complete, it may seem like it's stuck but it's not.

From your SFC Log I see that you might have corrupt AMD Drivers. Im not totally sure about this, but to MY knowledge, i think you do.

You can have this checked out by somebody else if they chime in here, or just create a new thread on it.

I would title it something like "Potential AMD Corrupt Drivers"... and give them your SFC log.

Let's get some more information.

Export CBS folder


  1. Navigate to the following folder in the File Explorer - C:\Windows\Logs
  2. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  3. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  4. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  5. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  6. Attach this new file to your next post.

  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

    Wait for this to finish before you continue (approximately 15 minutes)

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Sorry for the wait.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.


  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.
