Hi Everyone,

I'm having an issue where Windows Task Manager constantly crashes. I've completed several A/V scans, malware etc, all of which detected no instances that would affect WTM.

I have attached a log detailing the crash. The logs are identical every time i attempt to launch it.

Unfortunately, I do not have access to a vanilla/recovery copy of Windows 7 Home Premium x64 for a repair install - Unable to obtain one from MS either - being an OEM copy.

All other elements of the OS run perfectly. SFC/chkdsk do not detect any issues so at this point I am stumped.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Rory.View attachment taskmgr crash.zip

Just further, I have attached the most recent SFC CBS log, where Windows has finally recognized that taskmgr is damaged.

Thanks.

Hi Aura,

Thank You for your assistance. I have ran your fix, however Task Manager is still crashing. I have looked through the registry and there are no Task Manager keys or DWORD's in locations suggested. I'm now coming to the point where I attempt a repair install (I have since obtained a retail copy of HomePremium SP1 x64) However If I can avoid that and simply correct the Task Mgr registry issue, that'd save a lot of time.

Below is the SFCFix results:

We need to run SFC to see if the replacement is accepted. Follow the instructions below.

System File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't have the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Hi Aura,

I've just completed an SFC scan. No violations found. As the reg enrties/dlls/dwords are missing for task mgr, I'm thinking of exporting those relevant files from a known working windows 7 sp1 x64 system and import them to this laptop.. worth a shot? Unless you have any quicker ideas/options?

Here is the CBS log: Microsoft services

Cheers.

Can you list me the keys you checked for the Task Manager? Also, follow the instructions below please.

  • Attach this log in your next reply;
Alternatively, if these instructions are unclear for you, you can follow the tutorial below.

Hi Aura,

Thank you for the continued support. Here is the location in the Reg where I first looked for any TaskMgr related items: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies
\System.
The DisableTaskMgr dword was missing, so I created one and set to 0, which still didn't help, TM still crashes.

I will run the SURT now and attach the log once complete. Fingers crossed.

Thanks,

Rory.

Here is the CheckSUR results, no errors, but TM is still crashing:
