Hi,
I have a machine that constantly fails to install KB5025230 (error 0x800703f1) while installs other updates with no problem.
I googled a bit and looked though this site and it might be the problem with schema.dat but i can not figure out how to fix that and what to fix in particular.
I tried sfc and dism - both report nothing to fix, same to SFCFix.exe.
Attached my schema.dat, would appreciate any help.
Thanks a lot in advance.
Max

Please attach the CBS logs a well.

  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\Logs folder.
  • Right-click on the CBS folder and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Now the message will appear, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  • Click on the Yes button here.

  • Attach the file CBS.zip to your next reply.

Upload your DRIVERS Hive
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config and locate the DRIVERS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named DRIVERS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

This hive looks good, please attempt to update again with Process Monitor running.

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Try updating the system just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the square (CTRL +E) on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up the LogFile.PML and upload it to WeTransfer - Send Large Files & Share Photos Online - Up to 2GB Free and provide the link.

It actually fails at reboot, so while booted - the istall goes smoothly, but after first reboot at boot - it does something under installing updates and then "We were unable to install updates. rolling back" and after 3 or 4 reboots it boots back normally but in the Settings-Windows update i see the error as in the subject.

Ah, please provide the following logs.

C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\Setuperr.log
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\Setupact.log

Those folders do not exist actually. I re-started update installation (failed same way) and found that those folders are missing all the way. However i managed to find the files you asked for here: C:\Windows\Panther\UnattendGC and both have actual timestamps and create date. Both attached.

Those files are not very helpful, please try the following tool.

Download and run SetupDiag from Microsoft
  • Download
    60e45c659164d-SetupDiag.png
    SetupDiag to your desktop.
  • Right-click on SetupDiag.exe and select Run as administrator.
  • When completed the following files are created: "Logs.zip, SetupDiag.exe.config and SetupDiagResults.log"
  • Attach SetupDiagResults.log and Logs.zip to your next reply.

when I run the SetupDiag it is not able to find the logs as terminates with the message as follows:

Code:
D:\Temp>SetupDiag.exe

SetupDiag v1.6.2107.27002
Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

Searching for setup logs...
SetupDiag was unable to find a relevant log file. Exiting!

D:\Temp>

I was expecting this, let's take a look at another file. Please attach a copy of: C:\Users\Default\NTUSER.DAT

Warning: This fis ispecifically for this system. Do not use it on another system.

1. Please replace the current C:\Users\Default\NTUSER.DAT with the attached copy.
2. Reboot the system and attempt to update again.

That worked! Update installed smoothly with no errors! If you have a second - don't you mind explaining in brief what was wrong and how it was fixed?

Any way many thanks for help! Appreciate that a lot!

Hi,

You're welcome. Glad to hear the problem has been resolved... (y)
This issue has to due with the primary and secondary sequence numbers of the NTUSER.DAT file which did not match.

I will mark this thread as solved.
