Hello Community,
I turn to you today and hope that there is one or the other here who can help me with my problem.
For several weeks now, 5 servers have been experiencing the problem of not being able to install newer Windows Server 2019 updates. Current update status is August 8. That means the affected machines are running on 17763.4737. The September KB5030214 nor the October KB5031361 update can be installed. After the installation follows the reboot, the system boots into the recovery environment and only a boot help helps, this repairs the system so that it boots again which then brings the message that the updates could not be installed and a rollback to version 17763.4737 takes place. The event log gives the Windows Update error "0x800f0845". The interesting thing is that I can uninstall and reinstall updates up to 17763.4737, only the respective major updates after August are not installable.
Currently I am using a backup of an affected system as a test site to find the actual error to fix it on the 5 servers, the following has been done so far:
1. any third party software has been uninstalled
2. drivers have been completely uninstalled
3. sfc/scannow -> no component corruption detected
4. DISM /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth -> no component damage detected
5. chkdsk -> everything ok
6. all updates were uninstalled, so the version went back to 17763.737. From here, the September and October updates were installed. Both led to a rollback again
7. renamed SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2
8. installed the updates via Windows Update and also via manual download (catalog)
9. installed InplaceUpgrade via DVD with the option to keep all personal settings
10. the troubleshooter cannot detect any errors
The only thing that helped was an in-place upgrade, which does not retain any personal data. After the upgrade, updates were installed via the Windows Update service and restarted. This time the updates were installed successfully.
Unfortunately, I can't filter out any information from the logs that would help me troubleshoot the problem. I would be very grateful for any as I am currently stuck with my problem.
Thank you!
