This is my first post and I hope you can give us a hand we have a problem for quite some time in which a virtual machine with a Windows Server 2016 Standard.

And it does not let us or make updates nor allow us to make a DISM, we get the error code 0x8000ffff
We also get the same error when we want to install the Framework 4.8 on the machine or want to update the computer, the machine is free of viruses by a recent scan.
I have tried your SFCfix tool and I get the same error 0x8000ffff.

We have been struggling with this machine for a long time, we have done practically everything there is and there is no way.

I hope you can give us a hand, thank you
Best regards!

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Please follow the Windows Update Forum Posting Instructions and provide the requested files in your next post

Provide also a copy of the COMPONENTS hive.

Upload your COMPONENTS hive.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Good morning, sorry for not responding.

I haven't received a reply for a couple of days and I thought I would get something in the mail.

I thought I would have been abandoned to my fate xD

I attach the .zip with the file.

Let me know what you think, greetings!

Good morning too!

Please post also the CBS logs as requested in the Windows Update posting instructions.

Upload a copy of the CBS folder
  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\Logs folder.
  • Right-click on the CBS folder and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Now the message will appear, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  • Click on the Yes button here.

  • Attach the file CBS.zip to your next reply. If the file is too large to attach, upload the CBS.zip file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Please run the following command in an elevated prompt and attach services.txt to your next post.
Code:
WMIC SERVICE GET caption, name, startmode, state > "%userprofile%\desktop\services.txt"

Please set the "TrustedInstaller" service to start automatically in an elevated prompt and then reboot the server.
Code:
sc stop trustedinstaller
sc config trustedinstaller start= auto
sc start trustedinstaller

After the reboot run the following DISM command and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

Follow these instructions to boot the server into the Recovery Environment
  • Info: Use WinRE to troubleshoot startup issues - Windows Server
  • Boot the server from the correct Windows ServerISO, you can also use an evaluation version of the ISO - which you can download from the Evaluation Center.
  • When the setup screen appears click Next and Repair your computer, in the next screen select Troubleshoot and subsequently the Command Prompt.
  • Run the following command to find the drive letter of the Windows partition:
    Code:
    BCDedit
  • Now run the following command: (replace D: with the correct driveletter which showed by the previous command).
    Code:
    DISM /Image:D:\ /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions /scratchdir:D:\windows\temp
  • Normally you will see the following message:
Reverting pending actions from the image...
The operation completed. Any revert of pending actions will be attempted after reboot.
    The operation completed successfully.
  • Please post the result, especially when you get another (error) message.

Sorry for the delay but being an active server it is difficult for me to access the machine at my disposal.

Basically the commands and the Microsoft solution do not work when I start it to repair, rebooting several times to enter the recovery mode but nothing.

I try it inside the machine although I suppose that it will not work of course, in the last capture I try it but it gives me error.

Anything you comment me.

Could you please translate the info reported in the screenshots for me?

And, are you able to clone this server to a virtual environment for testing purposes, when it's a physical server you can use Disk2vhd to create an VHDx-image to load in a Hyper-V environment.

The boot configuration data store (BCD) could not be opened.
The requested system device cannot be found

In the diskpart when naming list disk: No fixed disks to display.

With error 87 of the third image: The /Image option specified points to a running Windows installation, you must use the /Online option.
Typical DISM error.

I would like to provide a copy but as it is customer information, I can not provide a copy of the machine, as it is not my own information but I would not care but as it contains customer data is an option I can not offer.

I'm sorry, I hope you still want to continue to help me with this issue, greetings!

Hi,

I don't mean to share a copy with me, but to clone this server in your own network so we can test some things safely in a testing environment.

Don't worry, the machine itself is already a copy for us of the original, totally isolated.

We can totally blow it up, there would be no problem to do the tests you tell me, anything, changes in registry and more aggressive things, whatever you can think of.
Because we have already done everything xD

Okay, tlease check if the file "C:\Windows\WinSxS\pending.xml" exists if so ZIP this file and attach it to your next post.

Please run the following command in an elevated prompt and post the result.
Code:
wmic qfe | findstr /C:"KB4535680"

Download the

Download the 64 bit version: - Farbar Recovery Scan Tool Link
  • Open the startmenu and type the command cmd.
  • After you find the Command Prompt, right click on it and select Run as Administrator.
  • Copy and paste the following into the Command Prompt and press enter.
Code:
reg load HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\COMPONENTS
Right-click on the file FRST64.exe and choose Run as administrator.
  • Copy and paste the following (code) into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
Code:
KB4535680
  • When the scan is complete, a message will display that SearchReg.txt is saved in the same folder FRST was started from.
  • Post the logfile SearchReg.txt as attachment in your next reply.
