Windows Server 2012 R2 Windows Update Error + DISM Error 582 illegal character

Hi there.

Hoping you can help me.

Got a virtuel server running HyperV. It has problems running Windows Update and install updates.

So I ran chkdsk and then SFC /scannow which failed.

I then ran DISM and it came with an error 582. An illegal character was encountered. Trying to restore health with a mounted iso image of 2012 R2 server and it comes with the same error.

Can anybody help with the next step?

Please manually upload the components hive by following these instructions:

Upload Components Hive
  1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  2. Right-click on the current COMPONENTS file and select copy
    Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  3. Right-click on your Desktop and select paste
  4. Right-click on the COMPONENTS file on your Desktop and select Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder
  5. Upload the zip from your Desktop to a file sharing service such as DropBox, OneDrive, SendSpace, etc. and include the link with your reply.

I'm finding a number of bitshift corruptions in the hive.
Has the RAM been tested on the physical server?
 
That doesn't look good. The RAM has not been tested on the host server but I will test it and get back.

Ran Memtest86+ Version 5.01 from Ultimate Boot CD on the host and no RAM error was detected. I think the errors might have come following a power failure.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  3. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please zip and attach this to your next post.

If the zip file is larger than 8MB, please use a file sharing service such as OneDrive, DropBox, SendSpace, etc. and include the link with your reply.
 
Looks like there are still corrupt keys.

Please turn off Windows Update (set to 'never check for updates') then zip and attach the latest version of the COMPONENTS file from C:\Windows\System32\Config\
Make sure no software or updates are installed or uninstalled until we replace the hive with a repaired version.

Step 1 - Replace Components Hive Manually

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download COMPONENTS.ZIP and save to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on it and select Extract all.... Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click Extract.
  3. Now we have the COMPONENTS file that we will be using to replace your current one.
  4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  5. Right-click on the current COMPONENTS file and select rename. Rename it to COMPONENTS.bad.
    Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  6. Take the file from the Components folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config

Step 2 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
    button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  3. When DISM finishes scanning your component store, zip up and attach your CBS log to your next post:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Hi again.

I downloaded the components.zip and placed the components in the folder.

I ran DISM and got error 14098 The component store has been corrupted. This time it reached 100% insted of the 20% it normally ended at.

I have zipped the CBS.log

Thank you. It worked Again with out problems. I ran DISM after the fix and it completed the repair this time :smile9:

Should I just run sfc /scannow and if this is ok then start Windows update again?
