Hi,

I'm hoping you can help me with an ongoing issue I am having with Windows Updates.
My Windows 2012 R2 Server (Standard) keeps failing for Security Monthly Quality Rollup Failure KB5040456 with error 80073712.
I have already tried the following steps to fix it with no luck:

1. SFC scan (did not find any integrity violations)
2. Manual install of update from Microsoft Update Catalog
3. Windows Update Component Store Reset
(manual rename of catroot2 and Softwaredistribution folders, restart windows update, BITS and crypt services with CMD)
4. DISM Online repair with/restorehealth (DISM Failed error 0x800f081f)
5. DISM Online repair with 2012 R2 Std ISO as Source (tried both with/without '/limitaccess') - Same error.

I have uploaded the ComponentsScanner.exe, and zipped CBS, DISM, and COMPONENTS which can be accessed here

Please contact me for any questions

Michael

Hi Peter,

I have completed the above. Please see SFCFic.txt attached
Please let me know next steps. Example should I now try and install the failing update, or should I run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth first?

Thank you

Hi,

I have run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth which has completed successfully. However, Windows Update still fails, now with a different error 80073712

Copy the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log to your desktop.
Zip the copied file and attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

The log reports:
Code:
2024-08-09 01:10:16, Info CBS Failed to extract files from cabinet \\?\C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\ba2ae1493ec21ab5b48d2846d22e509e\windows8.1-kb5040456-x64.cab [HRESULT = 0x80070070 - ERROR_DISK_FULL]
It looks like disk C: is full. Please do following.

FRST Fix:
  • Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
64-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.
  • Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  • Press the Fix button.
  • The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  • If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  • When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Attach the logfile Fixlog.txt to your next reply.

To fix another Windows Server 2012 R2 machine I'm looking for the following system files.
If they are on your machine please attach them in a zipfile:
C:\Windows\winsxs\Catalogs\77a5884b6eb7a8e366ed9045abdaf0231fcb5f47890a84a571cb5e9b1ae527b7.cat

Hi,

I have ran the above. Please see log file attached

I have managed to clear another approx. 3GB, however there's not a lot more I can clear.

There is an option to 'Clean-up Windows updates', which I'm not sure I want to do at least until we have fixed the update issue.

I have run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth again and now get this error:

Updated CBS and DISM logs can be found here

As for the requested missing system files, I could not find the first one (77a5884b6eb7a8e366ed9045abdaf0231fcb5f47890a84a571cb5e9b1ae527b7.cat), however please see the other two attached in catfiles.zip

Thanks for the 2 files.

Step 2:
Run the command sfc /scannow in an elevated commandprompt and report the result.
If it fails, copy the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log to your desktop.
Zip the copied file and attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.
Do NOT run the command DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth yet.

Try to install KB5040456 again and report the result.
If it fails, copy the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log to your desktop.
Zip the copied file and attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

Great.

Follow the instructions below to cleanup the tools and logfiles used in this thread.
Rename the file FRST64.exe to uninstall.exe and run it. This will remove all files and folders created by FRST and the tool itself.
Reboot the machine to complete.
You may remove all other tools and log files.

Take care.
