I have a Windows 2008R2 server on which all security monthly quality roll-up updates have failed to install since June with error code 0x80070002 - file not found

Other Windows updates appear to install correctly, it's just the monthly roll-ups that fail.

SFC /scannow shows no errors

SURT shows no errors

SFCFix.txt shows no errors

But in the cbs.log I have the following:

I've attached the various log files. I really don't want to have to rebuild this system just to get Windows updates working again if avoidable.

Thanks in advance

Hello and welcome!

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the attached file, SFCFixScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFixScript.txt - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

Install Update with DISM

  1. Download this update and save to your desktop. The file name will be Windows6.1-KB4019264-x64.cab.zip.
  2. Right-click on this file and select Extract All... Click the Extract button. You can close the folder window that opens
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Go ahead and allow if you receive the UAC prompt.
  5. Copy and paste the following command into the command prompt window and press enter.

    dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop\Windows6.1-KB4019264-x64.cab
  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation. <---You may not get this line.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)? <---You may not get this line.

Go ahead and do so if prompted. Let me know what errors if any come up. If you do get errors, please zip/attach your CBS.log

I run the command and have the following error reported:

C:\Users\Administrator>dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desk

I think that did the trick. The command ran successfully and didn't ask for any reboot.

So at this point I updated with the latest security update. Which also said it installed correctly but needed a reboot. So I rebooted the server and it appears to have gone missing from the network, not sure if it is stuck or has crashed, as I'm remote from the system, but it's not responding to ping requests.

Okay, so we have solved the update problem. Will you be able to physically access the server at some point in the near future to check what's going on?

Yes. I’ve arranged for somebody local to the system to go there in the morning when the building is open, so hopefully I’ll be able to find out what state the server is in

Thank you for all the assistance so far

Please keep me updated. I've never seen this happen. It might have asked for a reboot, but I've done this over 50 times and there never was a problem, so I'm a bit surprised and would like to get more info :)

The server was stuck at the bios startup page when somebody checked, no idea why, there was nothing else plugged into the system and it has been rebooted many times before without issue. They powered the server off / on and everything came back up normally.

Many thanks again for the assistance here, it looks like the updates are going onto the server again now the server has been rebooted successfully.
