Hello everybody!

I have problem with my server, which is run on Windows Server 2008 R2.
If this is a forum for workstations and non-server OS only, I apologize.

As I sad previously, I have a problem with my Win Server2008 server.
It won't update, neither automaticly, neither manually.

When I try to update, for example install the WinServer2008 SP1, it says: "An I/O operation initiated by the Registry failed unrecoverably. The Registry could not read in, or write out, or flush, one of the files that contain the system's image of the Registry."
I tried to start the Win Modules Installer service manually, but error again: "Windows could not start Windows Modules Installer service on Server. Error 1016: An I/O operation initiated by the Registry failed unrecoverably. The Registry could not read in, or write out, or flush, one of the files that contain the system's image of the Registry."

When I try to install some KB, for example Windows6.1-KB2577795-x64.msu, it says: "The update is not applicable for your Computer".

Try to fix it with all those Windows fixes: MicrosoftFixit-portable.exe; MicrosoftFixit50123.msi; WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab.. nothing helped.

Try to install "System Update Readiness Tool", but it can not be installed, I get the error: "The following updates were not installed: Hotfix for Windows (KB947821)"

I found here in one post a procedure to create "Components" hive in registry, which is missing in my registry.. but when I try to load the hive from: C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS, I get the error: "Cannot load C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS: Error while loading hive".

Please help if somebody know how :)

And yes, I restarted it many times.. :)

Regards!

Hello and welcome to the forum.

This one might be a bit tricky to fix.

  1. Click on the
    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
    button. Inside the search box type in CMD
  2. Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator
  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command SFC /SCANNOW
  4. Please wait for this to Finish before continuing with the rest of the steps.

Convert CBS.log to CBS.txt

  1. Click on the
    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
    button => Inside the search box copy and paste the following command:
    Code:
    cmd /c copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  2. Press Enter
  3. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please upload CBS.txt to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to you next post please upload via Dropbox or One Drive

Can you please go the following location C:\Windows\System32\config and look for the following files:
-COMPONENTS
-Any other files that start with the word COMPONENTS
-Or any files that have a similar name to COMPONENTS (it could be spelt different, have a number, a symbol etc)
If you find any please create a folder on your desktop and copy and paste all these files into this folder.
Next can you please zip this folder and upload them for me to analyze? The file may be too big to attach to this post, please use either Dropbox or One Drive.

Thanks
Alex

Thank You on your reply Go The Power :)

I ran the "sfc /scannow" command but I get the message:
"Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service."

I uploaded CBS.txt in .rar format, but for the Components file, there is a problem..

When I try to copy C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS, there is an error:
"Can't read from the source file or disk".

File properties says that COMPONENTS file has 26.5 MB, but I can't open it, neither copy it.

However, there is more files with COMPONENTS in their names:
"COMPONENTS.LOG";
"COMPONENTS.LOG1";
"COMPONENTS.LOG2";
"COMPONENTS{016888b9-6c6f-11de-8d1d-001e0bcde3ec}.TM.blf";
"COMPONENTS{016888b9-6c6f-11de-8d1d-001e0bcde3ec}.TMContainer00000000000000000001.regtrans-ms";
"COMPONENTS{016888b9-6c6f-11de-8d1d-001e0bcde3ec}.TMContainer00000000000000000002.regtrans-ms".
I'm uploading those files in "COMPONENTS.rar"

Thank You again and best regards!

Thank you for that. its a bit odd that COMPONENTS can not be copied, 26mb does sound really small though for size. The size is supposed to be around 35MB, there could be some large chunks missing.

  1. Click on the
    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
    button. Inside the search box type in CMD
  2. Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator
  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following commands
    dir %systemroot%\System32\config >1&&notepad 1
  4. Please post the contents of the notepad file back into this thread

As for the error itself I would recommend doing some HDD diagnostics to make sure this is not a failing HDD.

Warning:: This fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

Warning:: Before doing anything it is a good idea to back up any data/files that are important to you, in case your hard drive is dying. Please see Here

What I recommend from here is to run some HDD diagnostics. Please follow the steps here for SeaTools HDD Diagnostics. Run a Long test and a Short test, then report back the results to this thread.

chkdsk /f scan

  1. Click on the
    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
    button. Inside the search box type in CMD
  2. Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator
  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following commands
    chkdsk /f
  4. Reboot
  5. Download ListChkdskResult.exe (by SleepyDude) from Here
  6. Double click on it to run it. It will take a few seconds to scan, then it will open a Notepad window with the log. Copy and paste the contents of this into your next post please!

Thank You very much on your effort Go The Power!

For check disk.. that is little bit sensitive, 'cause this is our production server, so I cann't afford the restart at any time.. I must plan it..
We suspect that this is a disk issue too, but I saw a lot of solutions for various problems on this site, so I thought that we would get away without disk checking :)

Best regards!

That's fair enough, this error does appear when there is a HDD fault.

I really need to take a look at the COMPONENTS hive to try and see if it can be saved.

If you run the following command as admin does the COMPONENTS hive load?

reg load HKLM\COMPONENTS %windir%\System32\config\COMPONENTS

Thanks
Alex

Thank You very much Alex!

If I try to run "reg load HKLM\COMPONENTS %windir%\System32\config\COMPONENTS", I get the same error like I got before when I try to start Win Modules Installer service manually, or install SP1:

C:\Windows>reg load HKLM\COMPONENTS %windir%\System32\config\COMPONENTS
ERROR: An I/O operation initiated by the registry failed unrecoverably. The registry could not read in, or write out, or flush, one of the files that contain the system's image of the registry.

Best regards!
