windows resource protection has found corrupt files (cannot be fixed)

I have Windows 8.1 64-bit PC and for a while I have been unable to open apps or PC Settings and have also been having NVIDIA installer issues (i don't know if they are related) but I ran system checker and it found corrupt files that couldn't be fixed. I uploaded the last bit of the CBS log that looked pertinent (my total log is over 4 MB) as well as my system specs. Any help would be very much appreciated!

Welcome to Sysnative,

Firstly, your username is awesome! :)

Secondly, this should be a simple fix you'll be glad to hear.

SFCFix AutoAnalysis

  1. Download SFCFix.exe and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  3. Double click on SFCFix.exe to open it.
  4. Follow all on screen instructions and upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  5. Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please.

SFC Scan

  1. Press the Windows Key on your keyboard and X to open up the Power User Tasks Menu
  2. Click (or tap) Command Prompt (admin)
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue (approximately 15 minutes)

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Regards,
Stephen

Haha thanks! I'm a full-on physics fanatic! Thank you so much for your help, Stephen!

I have some stuff I gotta do right now but I'll try to upload the cbs log within a few hours.

I guessed you were - another Physics fan here! :D Instantly thought of this song when I saw your username: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0kXkWXSXRA

Anyway, it looks like SFCFix has done its job here. If you can do the SFC scan to check and upload the CBS log that'd be great.

Stephen

Hahaha that song is awesome! I did the scan and the cbs.txt couldn't be found by the command prompt. I found it manually but it is still almost 5 MB so I sent you the last bit of it where it looked like it had some errors. I also still have this problem where I can't open PC Settings. I click on the Change PC settings button in the side menu and the window will almost come up but then immediately be minimized. When I try to click it, it will try to open but be minimized again.

Thanks again!

Hi,

The CBS log looks clear, the [DIRSD OWNER WARNING] messages are nothing to be worried about and aren't a problem. If you want to make sure, run SFC once more and it should report that it didn't find any integrity violations.

also still have this problem where I can't open PC Settings. I click on the Change PC settings button in the side menu and the window will almost come up but then immediately be minimized. When I try to click it, it will try to open but be minimized again.
Hmmm, that's odd. I don't think that will be related to the SFC corruption.

I wonder if Event Viewer will show anything:

- open Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

Stephen

Interestingly enough, when I tried to save the stuff from Event Viewer, I got another error message.

Hello,

Have you used any custom themes or modifications for the start menu\start up screen etc?

Lets see if getting the event logs like this will produce any results:

Event Log Viewer

  1. Please download VEW.exe from Here and save it to your desktop.
  2. Go to your desktop and right click on VEW.exe and choose Run as Administrator
  3. Once open set the following settings
    • 'Select log to query'
      1. Tick Application
      2. Tick System
    • 'Select Type to list'
      1. Tick Critical
      2. Tick Error
      3. Tick Information
      4. Tick Warning
    • 'Number or date events'
      1. Tick Number of Events and set it to 20
  4. Click on Run
  5. Once completed a notepad file will open. Please copy and paste the contents of VEW.txt back into this thread.

Thank you very much for the help and yes I am at the University of Puget Sound and am using their ethernet.
Here is the log.

From looking at the Event logs it is indicating that you might have a corrupt profile.

I would first try a System Restore, if that fails then a profile reset would be the next step.

Okay I can't even remember when my computer was working, it was probably a few years ago that this problem started so I don't think a system restore would do it. I'll do some research on profile resetting though and let you know how it pans out. Thanks a bunch!

Is there a way to create a new account with the command prompt? I cannot utilize any of the metro app interface due to the error so I can't make a new user profile like that.

Thanks,
Quark

Hi,

Yup, there is. In the command prompt, enter:

Code:
net user /add [COLOR="#0000CD"]useraccountname [/COLOR][COLOR="#800080"]password[/COLOR]

Change useraccountname and password to the name you wish the account to have and the password for the account.
