I'll post a fix protocol a bit later (more caffeine required!)

I've uploaded a file - lbmaa.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive

Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...

Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract

Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start
tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which
should be the option 'Repair my Computer'

Pick that

You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt

At the prompt type

DIR C:\lbmaa

hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try

DIR D:\lbmaa

or

DIR E:\lbmaa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\lbmaa <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type

EXIT

and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt

then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply

Thank you very much for your assistance Noel - and apologies for not replying sooner but for some reason I didn't get notification of your reply.

As soon as I select "Repair My Computer" I get "Status 0xc0000225 - A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed". I tried booting with the Windows 7 disk and doing a start-up repair, but received a message that it 'couldn't repair this computer automatically'.

OK then, let's go about it a different way. :)

Same files, just a different way of fixing them.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.

  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Kind regards,
Stephen

Bother...

I think I may have made a mistake with the script..

It should have copied into C:\Windows\winsxs, but it seems to have copied to C:\Windows\winsxs\winsxs\

I've packed up for the night now, going to call in for some assistance!

Hopefully it's not a problem, but I'm fairly new to this, so will get an expert in :)

Don't worry, you're in safe hands here, and there's nothing dangerous going on. Just something I want to check.

Stephen

Back to the other way of doing it :)
Boot using the DVD, and go into the Repair Environment Command Prompt that way - NOT a Startup repair :)
then follow my instructions - they should work this time.

Hi LBuckingham,

This fix will require three stages. One to take permissions on the folder which shouldn't be in winsxs and to put the files in their correct place, one to delete the wrong folder, and one to reset the permissions and run SFC again :)

Tom

I tried Noel's bit again:

Back to the other way of doing it :)
Boot using the DVD, and go into the Repair Environment Command Prompt that way - NOT a Startup repair :)

then follow my instructions - they should work this time.

and it worked this time (3 files copied).

I then started on your bit Tom, but as soon as I drag the zip file onto the exe, I get a message saying its stopped working.

Darren

It'd be a good idea to delete it - but I don't think it's anything to worry about.

The scan is now clear :)

Were you having any actual problems you can use to check whether there's an improvement, or was this just as a result of regular maintenance?

I can see no other significant problems in the CBS data.

I was having some problems and ran sfc as a matter of course. I managed to fix the problems I was having, but the sfc message was bugging me, hence my post.

I really appreciate all your help guys.. it's nice to know it's sorted.

Cheers
Darren

It's quite possible that you'd never notice that these files were corrupted, if you have either IE9 or IE10 (or IE11!) installed, since they were from the IE8 install. However, they could have caused problems if you had to revert back to IE8 for any reason.

Glad to hear the issue is solved and the corrupt files are fixed.

My apologies for making this fix far more complex than it needed to be. I do double check my scripts to make sure they are safe and correct, but I must have missed the error. I am very sorry about that.

Regards,
Stephen

There's really no need to apologise Stephen.. I'm just so grateful that the likes of Noel, Tom and yourself give up your time in this way to help us guys out.

Many, many thanks to the three of you.

Cheers
Darren
