[SOLVED] Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them

Further to the my post #1, I would like to add the reason why I run the tools sfc and sfcfix is that I cannot open any of the Windows .msc files (including the services.msc file) and thus suspect that there are some corrupted system files that may have caused this problem.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. I don't know if the corruption is causing you not to be able to open .msc files but we can definitely help you with the corruption. Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download this file named SFCFix.zip, and save it to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each
    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Thank you Brian for your response. I have done step1 and step2 as you have instructed.
After running sfc /scannow, I still have this error:

C:\Windows\System32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 35% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Please find attached two files SFCFix.txt and CBS.txt.
Your help is very much appreciated.

Thanks for the info. Please do the following.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool
Please follow the instructions Here to run the System Update Readiness Tool. When the SURT finishes installing, zip up and attach the following log file.

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Step#2 - SFCFix Check
1. Download SFCFix.exe and save this to your Desktop.
2. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
3. Double click on SFCFix.exe to open it.
4. Follow all on screen instructions and upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop named SFCFix.txt.
5. Please post the contents of this log in your next post. Thank you.

Items for your next post
1. CheckSUR log
2. SFCFix log

Hi Brian,

I had run the SURT and SFCFix, and the output files CheckSUR.persist.log and SFCFix.txt are attached for your analysis.
Then, I ran sfc /scannow and I have corrupted file. I would like to point out that sfc always stop when the scan reaches 35% , and that at the end of the CBS.log (also attached), it always has 11 lines of ERRORS.

Further to the my last post, please find attached the latest CheckSUR.persist.log and SFCFix.txt.

It appears you ran the System Update Readiness tool about 14 hours later and now have another 14 corrupted files. Did you happen to do anything within this time frame (i.e. Uninstall anything) that may have caused this? Please let me know. Thanks.

Yes, that is helpful.

Yes, within the 14 hours, I had tried running Windows Update for the following two files:
- Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 (KB3038314)
- Update for Windows 7 (KB2952664)

But the update was not successful. I understand that after running System Update Readiness tool, it should solve the Windows Update problem, which is also another problem that I am having.

Now I Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
The resulted file SFCFix.txt size is too big for upload, so I zip it as attached for your further analysis:

Thanks for the information. I saw the following line in your CBS log (you may have to scroll to the right to see the actual key)
Code:
2015-04-25 18:33:49, Error                 CSI    000000fb (F) [COLOR=#ff0000][B]STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND[/B][/COLOR] #2950744# from Windows::Rtl::SystemImplementation::CBufferedRegistryProvider::SysQueryValueKey(flags = 0, key = 142b798 (error querying object name; ntstatus: STATUS_INVALID_HANDLE), vn = [ml:30{15},l:28{14}]"[COLOR=#ff0000][B]CommonFilesDir[/B][/COLOR]", kvic = 2, kvi = 2, disp = 2)[gle=0xd0000034]

Using the info you just provided, I've verified that this key is missing. This fix will put it back. Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

After this fix, go ahead and try to install those updates again. Also re-try the sfc /scannow. If they fail please provide me with a new CBS log. Thank you.

Hi Brian,
I've run the SFCFix.exe on the Registry key problem. Great! it has solved the Windows Update issue. Thank you.
Though now sfc can complete the scanning to 100%, it has found corrupted files, and its CBS.log is attached for your further help.

Great news! Sure, now we can fix the remaining corruption. Please do the following which should make it easier for me to fix.

Step#1 - Identify Corruption/Provide Paths
1. Download SFCFix.exe and save this to your Desktop. Or use the one that is already downloaded!
2. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
3. Double click on SFCFix.exe to open it.
4. Follow all on screen instructions and upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop named SFCFix.txt.
5. Please post the contents of this log in your next post. Thank you.

Thank you. This should fix the rest.

  2. Download this file, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
The file is about 50Mb so it's still uploading. The link may not work for about 10 minutes.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.

Kudos to you Brian. The problem is resolved with this output message!

C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Thank you very much.
