Windows Media Center Scheduler Service constantly stops

My system is Windows Pro with Media Center 8.1. Windows Media Center Scheduler Service constantly stops. I restart it and immediately close services and then open to it again in services immediately and it is stopped again. I have been unable to record any TV shows. The problem seems to be that C:\WINDOWS\winsxs\amd64_prncacla.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.16384_none_9590ba64d5b91f79\Amd64\CNBJ2530.DPB is corrupted. I have followed all suggestions in the other posts that I found. I was told to start another thread. What would happen if I delete this corrupted file? Would Windows System replace it? I have not done that nor will I till I hear back.

Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike,

Sorry for the delay - I have been incredibly busy lately!

Since there's been a bit of a wait - please can you do the following.

SFC Scan

  1. Press the Windows Key on your keyboard and X to open up the Power User Tasks Menu
  2. Click (or tap) Command Prompt (admin)
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue (approximately 15 minutes)

Export CBS folder

  1. Click the Start button :startorb: then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  8. Attach this new file to your next post.

Regards,
Stephen

Hi,

I'm not seeing any corruptions in the logs attached.

However, I'm also not seeing a new CBS log from the latest SFC run. Did you run SFC as instructed?

I don't think the file is actually corrupt any more, at least according to the logs I can see.

Let's see if I can get a better handle of this service problem.

- open Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

Hey Stephen,

Thanks for the quick response. I didn't expect to hear from you so soon. I did run SFC as instructed. In order to record TV programs I have been using a work around. I open services and manually start Windows Media Center Scheduler Service and leave services open. That has worked most of the time. All I see in the menu when I right click on Administrative Events is Open, Properties and Help. I don't see any way to save it. And Administrative Events is the only thing under Custom Views.

Peace,
Mike

Hi again,

I made a mistake. So I tried it again. When I right click on Administrative Events I get this error message: ScreenClip.png

When I try to save all the events that are showing as Admin.evtx I get the message that the system can't find the file specified. So I tried to export the events but could not upload the export file. Then I tried to select all the events listed and save them that way but the file was to big to be uploaded and I wasn't sure that would help.

Peace,
Mike

Hi,

Can you please do the same again, and when that error pops up, extend the width of the Log column so I can see the full name of the log.

To do that, click on the thin, grey vertical line between the Log and Error headings, and drag it to the right to made the log column bigger. Screenshot it and attach it.

ScreenClip.pngHi,

Once again thank you for your quick response. I'm not sure what you wanted me to do.

Hi Mike,

Sorry, I didn't explain myself very well...

What I want you to do, is try and export the admin events from event viewer again, so you get this error:

6326d1387491738-windows-media-center-scheduler-service-constantly-stops-screenclip.png

When it pops up, extend the width of the "Log" column, by clicking and dragging the column to make it wider (sorry, I wrote the wrong column name on the below pic - hope you get the idea!

Screenshot - 21_12_2013 , 10_10_30 PM.png

I need to work out what the name of the log that cannot be found is - and then I can fix it (already written a fix for the one I expect it to be, but just need to be sure!)

Stephen

Perfect. And that's the error I was hoping to see.

I have written a batch file to correct this. This error is caused by an invalid registry key. By deleting this key, the error should resolve itself. The batch file will automatically back up the key to a folder on your Desktop called RegBackup, which can be used to restore this key if issues arise. I have tried this on my own system(s) with no problems.

Batch File

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download the below file - frbass.bat and save it to your Desktop
  2. Right Click the file and choose Run As Administrator
  3. Follow the on screen instructions. If asked if you wish to permanently delete the registry key, type y and press Enter

Then try exporting the admin event viewer events as before.

Hi,

Thanks for your response. Here's the file you asked for: View attachment 6345

Thank you.

Once you fix the Event Log using the script provided by Stephen, I would like to ask you to do one more thing:

  1. Download Process Monitor and extract it
  2. Open Services (services.msc) window
  3. Make sure Windows Media Center Scheduler Service is stopped
  4. Run Process Monitor. It should start capturing the data
  5. Back to Services and start Windows Media Center Scheduler Service
  6. Keep refreshing Services (clicking F5) until you see Windows Media Center Scheduler Service is stopped again
  7. Back to Process Monitor and click magnifier icon (or CTRL+E) to stop the capturing
  8. Click Save (or CTRL+S), check "All events" and click OK
  9. Compress and attach PML file you just saved here
Thanks in advance.

Hi Mike,

I checked the log and the following events caught my eye:

Shares.PNG

As you can see, Media Center Recorder tries to access \\ABCDEFG-PC\Users\Public\Recorded TV\ share and it fails. What's even more strange here is the fact that your computer name is not ABCDEFG-PC, and Media Center Recorder knows that:

ComputerName.PNG

I see that recorder gets this incorrect path from the following registry key:

WatchedFolders.PNG

Even though I cannot say for sure that this is what's causing the issue, it is very likely and I would like to eliminate this issue. Maybe you know what ABCDEFG-PC is? Is it possible that you renamed you computer recently? Or maybe it's another device on your network which is no longer accessible? Could you remove this location (either by using Media Center GUI or editing HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Service\Recording\WatchedFolders registry key)?

Happy New Year TomasD,

I have no idea what ABCDEFG-PC is. It isn't anything in our network. And I have not renamed my computer. It is still FRBASS-PC. I was not able to find the key you wanted me to remove. I did a search for the whole string and did not find it. So I looked for ABCDEFG-PC. I found only one location and I deleted it.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Tomas,

After I did the above, I stared the service and then restarted my computer. Once my computer was running again the service was still running. Hopefully this took care of the problem. Thanks again for staying with this problem. I appreciate all your help. I will let you know if anything changes.

Peace,
Mike

Hi Mike,

I really glad to hear it seems to be working. If you won't notice any issues with recording and the service, please mark the topic as SOLVED. Otherwise, please let us know and we will continue troubleshooting this.
