Hi there,

After following the instructions of this thread, here I am.
https://www.sysnative.com/forums/private.php?do=showpm&pmid=31916

I have attached the requested files but for some reason, it is missing the msinfo32.
jcgriff2 said it was ok.

I got told to not run ComboFix, I though I could System restore if there was anything wrong...
So I also attached the report from if it helps...

· OS - Vista
· x64
· What was original installed OS on system?
I believe it was Window vista 64bits, my sister bought it from the retailer and never modified it.

· Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)?
My sister bought it from the retailer, but since she's not around for another 10days, I guess it is a full retail version.

But on the "Activation Windows" the ID product is an XXXXX-OEM-XXXXXXX-XXXXX, it might be an OEM...haha

· Age of system (hardware) : around 3 years

· Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS?
No, I haven't re-installed it.

· CPU
Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4200 @ 2.00GHz (2 CPUs)

· Video Card
Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family

· MotherBoard
Satellite u500

· Power Supply - brand & wattage (if laptop, skip this one)
Laptop

· System Manufacturer
TOSHIBA

· Exact model number (if laptop, check label on bottom)

I would start with McAfee removal.

Use removal tool - Uninstallers (removal tools) for common antivirus software - ESET Knowledgebase

Reboot upon completion.

Install MSE - Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows

How does the system run in safemode w/ Networking? Any slowness?

Thanks for the quick reply, and for correcting me. I though you would have waited 24 hours for the verifier to finish.

I removed McAfee, installed MSE.

Also, I created a system restore point before using combofix, if this can help.

On a second note, I went into safe mode.

-It took me 2mins to open the user interface (where you first log in with the password),
-When I attempted to open a few things, it lagged out. Way more than in normal boot.
-After a couple minutes in, it does like a normal boot and everything seems to run fast.

*The laptop seems more fast w/ McAfee

Edit : I tryed back Safe mode. It was way faster than the first attempt.
I ran a timer and it took me 1:30min to open the whole session (from the time I selected Safe mode in the list).

The programs were opening instantly, with no apparent delay.
Guess it isn't so bad.

Hi. . .

McAfee like other Internet Security Suites are system resource hogs. You can always reinstall it once we are done here.

Did your sister purchase this system recently or in 2009?

If recently, I suggest that you reinstall Vista using the HDD Recovery partition.

Code:
Lecteur	[COLOR="#FF0000"]D:[/COLOR]
Description	Disque fixe local
Compressé	Non
Système de fichiers	NTFS
Capacité	11,28 Go (12 116 291 584 octets)
Espace libre	4,12 Go (4 418 514 944 octets)
Nom du volume
Numéro de série du volume	380E5300

Back up important files first!

Press '0' just after powering up the machine to enter Recovery.

I believe she bought it in 2009. Do you want me to reinstall D: ? (I don't understand why you quoted that..)
If not, I don't think i'm allowed to formot her laptop right now...it has tons of important files inside and if the problem is inside vista, I will ask her to do it...in ~9 days.

The only thing one D: is the Search Index and my Pagefile

Eric

Hey there Eric,

I'll have to await JCGriff2's reply to see exactly why he posted that but here's my guess.

Jcgriff is suggesting you restore the computer to it's factory state by entering recovery mode from boot. He was saying that if you recently bought this PC, try restoring it, because there probably won't be much data. However, since you bought it in 2009 and you say there's a lot of important info, hold off on the restore for now.

Did you create the D partition or did it come with the laptop? If it came with the laptop, I think it is the recovery partition, hence why JC quoted it. The PC would restore from that partition.

I'm currently analysing the logs. I'll post back if I find anything useful.

Stephen

Right then, I'm looking though your logs as I type this post. I'll type what I find! :-)

Firstly, I see you have these programs installed:

Code:
Advanced System Care Ultimate
Uniblue Registry Booster

These programs are known to cause more harm than good, they're registry cleaners. Registry cleaners, especially those two, often are too powerful with their cleaning and will delete keys that are important to Windows, causing slow downs and crashes. They do the opposite of what they're meant to. This isn't just speculation, I have personal experience with the issues they can cause. A while ago, I had to wipe and reinstall windows on two PC's that had a registry cleaner run on, since the install was hosed.

I'm not saying that's exactly what's happened to your machine, but it certainly won't have helped!

As I posted in your other thread, please then do the following:

- open Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

In my above post, I said to hold off on the recovery because it will wipe all data from the HDD. I still stand by that ATM, however, do you have the disks that came with the PC when you bought it? If so, exactly what disks do you have?

Regards,
Stephen

Hi there,

Thanks for the specifications. The 11GB came with the computer, but before moving the pagefile and search index, I made sure there was nothing important on it.
(I looked inside windows files and saw nothing, but my knowledge in computers is limited...). I will wait for JC before doing the next move. (I also sent my sister an email, asking the permission to reinstall...)

-I have no clue why it does that with her laptops...she must be doing something wrong. (This is the second laptop that reacts like that).

After looking inside (the first laptop she gave to my mom), I realized it has not Service pack 1 (yes it wasn't done...after all these years).
I barely attempted to install it and after multiples failure, I concluded that I should re-install (which is not done yet).

So, anything you find in the logs, that could show her mistakes, let me know.I don't have problems with my pc, so I guess i'm not totally bad in computers...

On another hand, my sister installed RegistryBooster (and probably used it), it may have caused the damage.
I use, and installed Advance System Care because in this laptop because it is a nice tool to clean up the internet folders (and gain some speed).

But I have not seen the long term effects : I will unistall it from all my pcs, before it does damage.

PS. I will do your instructions aswell : I forgot to do it inside the other thread.

Eventviewer : I attached the file. If there is anything wrong, let me know.
My primary language is french so there might be some issues while I saved the file...

Hi,

Not a problem, glad to be of assistance!

There is a reason that 11GB looks free - it's a hidden partition. Although I would like to check that.

Click Start --> Right click Computer --> Click Manage --> Press Yes or Continue to the UAC that comes up --> Click Disk Management --> Take a screenshot and attach it to your next post.

If you are not comfortable with performing a clean install due to the loss of all data, or she does not want you to do that, a possible alternative is a Repair install, or an In-Place Upgrade Install. There is a good tutorial on it here: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...-install-windows-windows-7-windows-vista.html that would be a good read.

The advantage of a repair install is, unlike restoring to the recovery partition or a clean install, is that programs and data is not touched. It is still recommended to take a backup, but they should not be touched by the install. It's not as thorough as a clean install, but often can fix issues.

However, I would wait and see what JCGriff advises first. :)

Regards,
Stephen

I edited my last post, you got faster than me...

Here is the picture, if this what you wanted.

Hey,

Yup, as I suspected, the D drive has data on it. It is an 11.28GB partition with 4.12GB free, so there is something there. That'd be the recovery partition, hidden from view.

Thanks for the logs, I'll look over them now.

You welcome. But as mentioned, there is my Search Index and pagefile on this one (I move it there after looking on the internet....though it would be a benefit to use these GB for something)

Oh yeah, good point. :-) In that case, I'm not sure exactly what it is. I do see another 10.74GB partition, that could be it. Not sure...

I might have done a mistake....I went in system restore and it seems to reinstall Windows(I believe it blanked my data) and it didn't touch at the D driver.
You guys want any more logs ?

Ohhh....

Did you do a Factory Restore by pressing '0' at boot or did you do a System Restore in Windows by going Start --> System Restore?

If you did the factory restore, yes, all your data is now gone from the HDD. I hope you had a backup, because unfortunately, there is no real way of getting the data back. If you did a System Restore however, it should not have wiped any personal data.

Could you please clarify what you did?

Regards,
Stephen

Yes, I can clarify....

I pressed '0' on boot up and factory restore (only clears windows and keep the partition already made). This is not the exact words but I have to translate everrything i'm saying because the laptop is in french. So basically I lost all the datas. But I prevented and made a backup.

I just don't get that everytime I do something in Windows, it result by having the data wiped lol.

Do I have to do something specific now? like installing drivers/updates ? This is the first time, I reinstall a laptop...but before I would like to make sure everything is "ok"...

Ok. Yes, you did a factory restore. That is what JCGriff2 recommended.

Your system is now exactly the same as you bought it. There are some things I recommend doing now you've restored Windows. Thanks to Writhziden for these steps! :)

Writhziden said:
Once you are ready, install drivers and Windows Updates in this order:

  1. Install the following drivers first. Obtain drivers from the vendor/manufacturer (HP, Dell, etc.) or from the motherboard support site (Gigabyte, ASUS, etc.) and display card manufacturer (NVIDIA, AMD, etc.) if custom built.
    • Network drivers that you downloaded and saved externally prior to starting the upgrade install.
    • Audio Driver.
    • Display Card (Graphics Card) Driver.
    • Chipset Drivers.
    • USB Drivers.
    • All other drivers. Also, Identify and Fix Problem Devices

  2. Windows Updates should be installed after drivers. Check optional updates for a list of any missing drivers. Try to find those drivers from your vendor or manufacturer rather than installing through Windows updates if possible. Install all important updates first. Then install optional updates that provide security or stability improvements to the system.

If you do have any questions at all, feel free to ask and I will do my best to guide you through the process. That's why I'm here!

Kind regards,
Stephen
