Hi,
I wanted to register for the Windows 10 update but there was no Windows logo on the Rigt Hand Side of the taskbar. I download a fix from Microsoft which came up with the error message as in the title of this thread.
I then downloaded the SFCFix from Sysnative with the following result:

SFCFix version 2.4.5.0 by niemiro.
Start time: 2015-07-18 15:39:32.812
Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1 - amd64

What would you like me to do next please?

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. We can check a few things out. Please do the following.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

It was a windows update troubleshooter. it said that the windows error was not fixed (as in the subject line of this thread). All other things were fixed - "service registration is missing or corrupt" and "Problems installing recent updates".

OK. Your logs are clean. Do you have any issue getting to Windows Update and installing Windows Update or is the only issue you have regarding the icon for the Windows 10 registration?

I also have the problem of Windows Update not installing 2 important updates (optional updates work fine). I have tried a suggestion on the Microsoft forum to stop 3 services, rename 2 folders, then start the services again. I did this twice without success. The 2 important updates both relate to Internet Explorer - Security update for IE 8 (KB3065822) as well as IE 11 for Windows 7 for x64-based systems. I do not use Internet Explorer so is there any way of removing them completely, instead of just hiding them ?

Not in Windows 7. They are a part of the OS. In Windows 8 you can completely remove IE.

I can work with you to try to get all the IE updates installed if you wish as well.

Let's work on the Windows 10 thing first. Please do the following.

Remove Update Manually
1. Click on the Start
Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter
wusa /uninstall /KB:3035583

4. Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.

Awesome. Now let's re-install and you should get your Windows 10 icon to reserve a copy.

Install Manually
1. Download KB3035583 to your desktop.
2. Install from this downloaded file
3. Reboot even if not prompted to

You should get your icon to reserve Windows 10.

I got the icon but unfortunately it now says GWXUX has stopped working and I cannot get any further. I tried removing gwx.exe in processes but that was a waste of time.

I do want the Windows 10 notification but it will not let me in to register for it. It was suggested as a fix but it didn't work. Also gwx.exe just starts up on a reboot so everything is exactly the same i.e. the icon is still there but I cannot do anything.

I only highlighted it and clicked "end process" from "Processes" in Windows Task Manager. It automatically returned as soon as I rebooted - it is definitely there now.

I have tried this 3 times. Unfortunately after clicking on the notification icon I get the same "GWXUX has stopped working".

OK, at this point we have two avenues for you to choose from.

1. I can send you over to the Windows 10 group to see if they can resolve this issue for you
OR
2. We can work on the other updates that you have issues with. There's always a chance that these are causing your issue. I can't be sure.

Let me know and we'll go from there.
