Hi,

I have a Windows 8.1 pro computer with the latest windows updates.

Every few day so the component store is becoming corrupted - the System process uses 100% of cpu in the task manager (13% in my case) and the system slows right down with corrupted sound etc.

If I run the command "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" it reports "component store corruption was repaired" and System goes back down to 0 - 1% cpu usage. However a few days later the problem reoccurs.

Windows updates are installing fine and there aren't any other problems I can find - does anyone have any ideas what I can do? rather then running dism cleanup daily :(

Cheers

Have you checked your system for any malware/spyware, trojan, worm or Virus that may have hijacked your component store? That's were I would start first, making sure your system is completely clean.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply - the computer is definitely completely clean. The problem is System keeps hanging / using 13% cpu but its random... only happens every few days... i've checked scheduled tasks etc for something that could be causing it but having a hard time finding a common factor.

I'm wondering if i'm being mislead by the messages in DISM. If I go /checkhealth it says no component store corruption but if i do /restorehealth it was the component store corruption was repaired??

I have attached some log files for DISM. If this is not the cause where else should I start looking for System hangs?

Thanks!

QUOTE=Tekno Venus;77429]Hi,

It is highly likely we will be able to repair the corruptions without needing to do a full repair install. Please upload your CBS folder as per the posting instructions: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/windows-update/4736-windows-update-forum-posting-instructions.html

Thanks for the reply - I have uploaded the CBS folder here View attachment 8636[

I'm wondering if this is a display issue with dism however - since a /checkhealth says there's no corruption but /restorehealth says the corruption was successfully repaired - does restoreheatlh always say that regardless of if there was anything to repair??

Anyway i'm thinking this might be more of a driver/service issue - trying to troubleshoot. Process explorer so far says its ntoskrnl.exe/system with RtlSidHashLookup using all the cpu

Thanks

I have tried to capture a trace with the windows performance analyzer (winadk) toolkit - however i'm unable to intrepet it :( . It definitely shows "System" as high cpu usage but when I expand the [+] it just has ?!? for all the options in the tree.

Can someone please have a look at my ETL file here (200MB): - Have i collected it correctly? Cheers

EDIT (Can't edit post so posting again): OK dumb moment i installed the LATEST windows performance analyzer for 8.1 and now I can expand it .... but the problem seems to be Wdf01000.sys which underneath that could be ACPI.sys or usbhub.sys - can someone please look at the ETL file to see if i'm correct?

If so any ideas on what could be causing that? Should I start a new thread with a more relevant title?

Problem solved!! - going on the idea that the problem was coming from usbhub.sys - i disabled several usb controllers till the problem went away... turns out it was the usb controller that is internal to the laptop - the one that the fingerprint reader and webcam are connected to... obviously via an internal usb port.

Webcam was fine, but fingerprint reader was the cause - disabling fingerprint reader in bios completely fixed the problem. Will submit the laptop for repair with a faulty fingerprint reader - it was visibly strobing as connected/disconnected in device manager.

thanks for your suggestions of help!

Good work! :)

Just so you know, your CBS logs showed no issues either.
