Hey all,

I am somewhat disenchanted by my own skills at software-related problemsolving, when it comes to finding the little devils in my OS architecture. I am looking for help.

Since Windows 10 was announced on my computer and the pushing began, I have had a fair deal of problems. Firstly, my RAM created a jumble of issues that I wrongfully attributed to the transitional Win 10. Some RAM was faulty, but I did not realise this before deleting a mess of KB-updates. Since the updates were removed, dating back to where the problem began, Windows Update is only stating that it cannot update while important files are in use. Restart Now is my only option.

Ive done the FixIt, SFCfix, Sfc /Scannow, fsutil, tried deleting TXR-folder content but to no avail. I hope someone will be able to read my CBS mess and tell me whats up. Thank you very much for your time. Attachment is too big, so I am linking to the file.

What windows are you running? did you do the win10 upgrade? what do you mean by "done the FixIt, SFCfix, etc.? If you "done the SFCfix." there was a log posted to your desktop. Please attach to reply.

Hi, wben. Thanks for writing. I am on Windows 7 SP1. I tried to do the Windows 10 upgrade recently, to get away from the looping Windows Update, but lo and behold, after downloading I was prompted with an error, saying the installation failed. This must be attributed to Windows Update yet again, because it popped up during the preliminary installation.

I have supplied you with a link around 10 mb, it contains the .txt which says nothing is corrupted on my end. "Done" means went through. MS' own FixIt which fixed some registry corruption on the first run and on the second recorded issues with the update database bit was unable to fix that!

Hi drcasino :)

You said that you had faulty RAM stick(s) on your computer, did you change it/them yet?

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I have switched my RAM. Ran them through 10hrs of Memtest86+ and they passed.

Alright awesome, follow the instructions below please :)

Thank you!

Silly question, perhaps - but it says amd64. I have an Intel based machine. Is that something to look at?

amd4 refers to your current Windows system architecture, in that case, it's 64-bit. If SFCFix reported x86 instead, it would have been 32-bit :) Good, so there's no corruption in the Registry, we can move forward. Follow the instructions below please.

Do you still get the same error message?

The error message is Windows Update refusing to check for updates with the statement "Restart your computer... Windows cant update important files..."

I am sorry if I havent made it clear - there is no error message as such, my OS has just decided not to install updates after Windows 10 has started its prompt for install. (And I did try to install Win 10 to get rid of the choke, but am unable.)

The main problem is that I have uninstalled a jumble of KB-updates and at the end of that and switching RAM cannot get Windows Update to respond with anything. The irony is that it still wants to install the GWX update, but ignores everything else.

The main problem is that I have uninstalled a jumble of KB-updates

Did you uninstall them randomly, or did you uninstall only updates related to the Windows 10 upgrade?

I ended up uninstalling semi-randomly, leaning against what KBs Google threw at me, relating to this problem. :yikes:

Alright, perform a clean boot following the instructions in the list below, and see if you can "Check for updates" after.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135

If you can, please list me the updates that are available to install (both Recommended and Important).
